\systemroot\system32\config\default Error

So at first my Dimension 9100 was giving me a \systemroot\system32\config\software error (blue screen, fear!) and wouldn't load windows.

I found the guide on microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us

When I got to the line; copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak my computer couldn't copy the file.

So I restarted and it began giving me a \systemroot\system32\config\default error on the blue screen of death. So I went into setup for windows, repair, and when it was finished and tried to load the default settings it couldn't and I ended up with:

Setup cannot set the required Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal Setup error.

Windows still won't load.

I've been told I need a new HDD, and I really wanted to confirm if this is true.

Thanks in advance~

should give your pc a quick cleaning once a month, if you do it once a month it will take a minute or two and done ;)

go here and download the seatool

let it check your HDD and see if it says it faulty ;)

Problem is windows won't load (suppose I should add that to the OP), there's no way I can DL it onto my Dimension. >< I see the SeaTools for DOS, is it possible to DL it on a seperate machine and burn it to a disk? Or does it actually need to be installed from get go.

I'll be cleaning my other computers in the mean time <_<.

Hurray I can get on windows! Ok so.. found 60 or so errors on the HDD and repaired them, everything seems to be running alright. Now I have a slight problem with the graphics lol.

Internet Explorer won't run at all (firefox is functioning) and any game I load has awful graphics and moves like a snail. I went to device manager and checked on the display adapters which aren't functioning correctly. What I have is Radeon X600 256MB HyperMemory and another (same) listed as a secondary. Also listed is a 3 1/2 in. floppy drive which doesn't exist. :smileyindifferent:

Anyways, I've tried to disable and enable them to no avail so far.

Very nice, I'll do that. Also, I ran a system restore and everything seems to be functioning normally, graphics are fine now. :)

Thanks again!

good if things are great in a day or two, disable system restore to wipe out the old one and then set it back again and make a restore point so you have fresh working one.
