Task Mgr Processes

Hi,  When I turn on my Inspiron 6000 before I start anything there are 76 processes showing in the task manager.  That sounds like a lot, is it?  There are no applications running.  My desktop only has 35 processes.  What do I do to find out what they are?  Should I just google the ones I don't know?

I should have mentioned that you should try to disable 'within the program' items that are on the far right of your taskbar. Just right-click an icon and see if there is a setting or option that allows to disable upon startup. You can rest assured that it is safe to do so if the vendor of the program allows disabling of it's own. After you have done those, reboot, and go through the method above.

I am hoping that you recently got the computer, and that most of these processes represent the bundled software. If you have a printer, and anti-virus software, and assuming that you want it, you should set a target of about 30 processes, perhaps even less.

It will take some computer management, but here is a great start. First, create a restore point by going to Start> Help and Support> Tools?, etc. depending on your particular lay-out. Once you have created a restore point, open up your web browser to bleepingcomputer.com. Click on the 'Startup List' tab at the top. Then, go to Start>Run, type in msconfig, and click OK. Click on the 'Startup' tab. Using the row of letters A-Z on the web page locate the first 'Startup Item' with a check-mark that appears in your computer's list. Click the 'filename' on the web page and you will get a summary of that process with it's recommendation. Read it several times to see how applicable it may be to you. If it recommends to disable it, and if you agree, then uncheck the box in your utility. Once you have unchecked all the items that you wish to disable upon startup, click 'OK' and close off the utility and follow instructions; it probably will just ask you if you wish to reboot now for the changes to take place. When the computer comes back up you will get an applet informing you that your startup has changed, just check the box and continue.

Open up your task manager and see how many processes you then have. I will keep in touch. Good-Luck!

THANKYOU for the website!  I can't wait for my husband to come home with the computer to start checking the list.  No we've had it about 15months.
