You aren't beiong specific about "it doesn't work". Do you see any diagnostic message over on the right side. I was having problems initially because it refused to execute without a password. I got a fix for that from Kelleys-Korner, and now the scheduler works fine. That might not be your problem, but you need to give us more details about what happens.

I do not receive any messages regarding anything.  Nothing different is happening, the only reason I do not think it is working is that I have scheduled several tasks and nothing seems to run on schedule.  I also do not think a password  is the problem, because I am the only one using the computer and do not have any passwords set up anywhere.  I do not know what more I can add.  Tell me what I can do to further check it out.

You were told in a previous "Reply" that the Task Scheduler normally needs a password to run Tasks.
But you can get it to run without a Password by using Regedit

(Needs  Windows SP1 installed.)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
limitblankpassworduse    DWORD    0

or use Kelly's Korner vbs  script;
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/sthome.vbs
Just Authorize Script.

Passwords probably aren't the problem, but I also am the only one using my computer, and I also did not set up any passwords. That doesn't seem to matter.

I read the article that you noted. My problem is that the Run As box, which is blank, and password function are both disabled and can't be changed. Any ideas?

Don't know reason why Password is disabled but if you use my above Reply info it should run without a Password in your account "User Accounts".

After spending hours searching the net for fixes to this problem , all I have managed to achieve is to establish that there a number of us out there with the same problem !

Is your task scheduler shown as  'starting' in the services window of administrative tools (in control panel) ?

If you do manage to fix this please post here.  Meanwhile I'll keep looking.

Cheers

I assume your Task Scheduler doesn't show at started.?
So you could check "Task Scheduler" > Click "Advanced"  & should show "Stop using......." if its shows "Start using ....."   Click it.

It should also show "Pause ......"   if it shows "Continue ........"  Click it.

in administrative tools / services :

task scheduler definately shows as 'Starting'

Events log is 'Started'

Remote Procedure call(RPC) is 'Started'   (this is shown as a dependantr task for task Scheduler(TS)

in Scheduled tasks / advanced tab

Stop using  Task Scheduler is available but produces message 'unable to stop the service' - 'Pause task scheduler & AT service account' are both greyed out. I can view the log though!

If I try and add a scheduled task i get the 0x80041315 message

the most recent mesage in the TS log is :

"Symantec NetDetect.job" (NDETECT.EXE)
 Finished 03/05/2004 09:37:00
Result: The task completed with an exit code of (65).
"Task Scheduler Service"
 Exited at 03/05/2004 11:45:03
[ ***** Most recent entry is above this line ***** ]

I've even tried to start the schtasks from a command line .. it doesn't seem to find the exe and the old at.exe returns a messgae 'the servoce has not been started'

I've also got Norton Internet security running - all updates manual at the moment..

last but not least .. I seem to have had a bad startup from about the same time. I always have to choose the start from last clean config..but it's there every time I reboot or switch on..

PC = P4 / 3Ghz / 512 ram / 120 gig hd / XP SP1 / I have a wireless network and everything is bang uptodate with microsoft / symantec / netgear..

Sorry so much info .. but if this rings any bells I might get my life back .. it's keeping me awake .. how sad is that!

pps - this is second time I've tried to post this reply so if there are two please ignore one or other..

many thanks..

You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
sfc  /scannow  (space after sfc)
---------------
If that doesn't fix problem you could try a Windows Repair from boot of DELL XP CD.
1st set BIOS to try CD-ROM as 1st choice by pressing "F2" key at startup.
(Some Computers use the "Del"  Key to enter BIOS setup).
Re-start the Computer with the XP CD inserted & start Install by pressing the "Enter" key.
Then press the next R key when it is displayed as an option.
Don't press the 1st R key displayed for the Recovery Console.

Windows Repair leaves the installed Programs & Data intact but you will have to download the Windows Updates again , including SP1a if the XP CD doesn't show it on the CD label.

Remember to Enable a Firewall like the XP Firewall to protect against the Blaster Worm virus & others , before going on-line.
------------
Failing that if you don't get a fix you will probably have to Clean Install from boot of XP CD.
Use the below links for info on a Clean Install then install Drivers from DELL Drivers & Utilities (Resource) CD with Windows XP Desktop started ,
just insert Driver (Resource) CD & click OK.

I have shown  Supersite & Elder Geek links last as they assumes Clean Install status so doesn't include step to delete existing partition  & so achieve Clean Install status.
(Clean Install status , ie: no Windows OS installed on HD).

Use  this link & select XP Home or PRO then method , ie: Used Hard Drive , Multi_Page has text & large pictures of Clean Install.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

Use this link for Clean Install of XP , if you click on Pictures they Expand for easy view
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (Delete existing partition at step 10b for Clean Install)

or use this link ( *** Delete existing partition at step 5 for Clean Install ***)
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

or use this link (***Delete exiting partition at Fig 06 for a Clean Install**)
http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm

Clean Install deletes existing partition (like FDISK)  &  Formats HD during Install of Windows XP  from XP CD.
Set BIOS to use CD-ROM as 1st boot device usually by pressing "F2" key during boot (startup),
for some Computers press "Del" key. (the Key should be shown on first screen displayed at startup)
Re-start Computer & when message "Press any key to boot from CD" shows do it & let subsequent messages "Press any key...." time out to Windows setup.

I will keep this short.  Spent most of the day on phone to MS / DELL and also followed your instructions upto after  the Repair install...  I wasn't too keen on a clean install until I'd exhausted everything else .. so I spoke to Microsoft.

The resolution to this problem turned out to be.... the task scheduler log file 'schedlgu.txt' in C:\WINDOWS was in READ ONLY - I can only guess XP did this for me!  It took MS a long time to find, but they got there.   I cut and pasted stuff from this file in an earlier post but did not think to look at properties.

Anyway off to re-install Norton etc..

Thanks for all your help.

Christine
