The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004)

I recently acquired a Dell Studio 1555, and I've had a lot of problems installing new software on it. More often than not, when I download and install something, I get the following message as the installation is about to finish:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004)

I then get a Vista popup telling me the program has stopped worling. If I click on "details," I get the following info:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
  Application Name:    hpqkygrp.exe
  Application Version:    9.0.0.257
  Application Timestamp:    45ec65f0
  Fault Module Name:    ntdll.dll
  Fault Module Version:    6.0.6001.18000
  Fault Module Timestamp:    4791a7a6
  Exception Code:    c0150004
  Exception Offset:    00009cac
  OS Version:    6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3

Does anyone know where the problem could come from? I'd greatly appreciate any help.

hpqkygrp.exe appears to be part of some HP printer/scanner software. You may need to uninstall and reinstall it.   Read this.

In that case, disconnect the device from USB and then uninstall the software.  Then reboot and start the installation again. Do not reconnect the printer/scanner to USB until the installer tells you to do it.
