I started to notice that some of the shortcuts in emails had stopped working on Wednesday and it has gradually got worse by other shortcuts not working.
The control panel was working this morning and I tried system restore but there was only the last 3 days (Thur, Fri, Sat) I tried the oldest one while I had access to the restore but it did not help. I no longer can get access to system restore because I can't access control panel (getting the error message - no file association)
Did this just happen recently? If so, try using system restore and go back to when it was not there It looks like it has something to do with the Control Panel.
Try going to Drivers & Downloads, enter your service tag number and download and install the video drivers. See if this correct the problems.
THIS THREAD seems to have information on fixing the control panel issue. If this does not work, the download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, update it and do a quick scan. Report back if it finds anything.
Sorry for taking so long - I could not access my documents/download folder where the Malwarebytes program went - then the computer allowed me access to my control panel and I went to system restore and restored to an earlier date which went through the motions and told me I was successful.
Tried some shortcuts and there was an improvement from earlier on but still getting the message for others. Everything has started to respond very slow now I must have a virus or something.
First of all may I apologise for my ignorance by not contacting you last night/this morning.
By the time I managed to get the Malwarebytes up and running it was 12.30am and I thought it was too late to continue. That initial test found 66 problems - I ran the cleaner and the program sorted the issues it found - but the problem "this file does not have a program associated with it" for most of my links/shortcuts was still evident. I then did another Malwarebytes scan and it informed me there were no issues. So I'm afraid I am still stuck.
Hi again Pudgyone - I received a warning from Dell today about my posting. Not being the brightest of people I'm not too sure what I have done wrong but it has to do with the information I added about my computer (it has been removed) May I apologise to you now Pudgyone if you have inadvertently got your fingers burn trying to help me. I would like to reassure you whatever I have done was done through stupidity (not an excuse) and not intentionally and I hope this does not mean that I cant call on further help from you.
That's ok, I didn't know about the thread. It was the thread with all the specifications on it. Maybe done with Belarc Advisor.
What you need to do is go and read Please Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help then post that Malwarebytes found 66 problems and they can help to get your computer back to working properly. Also tell them that you were locked out of the control panel for a period. Do mention that you have a file and the number of it that does not have a file associated with it.
I have to be honest with you at this point Pudgy - there is now way that I can understand or complete the instructions given by the Trend Micro Hijack program it is way over my head. I have ran the program and have a log but can't go further
All you have to do is download and install HijackThis. After you insall it abd open it, do a system scan and save a log file. It will produce the information in notepad, so it can be copied and pasted to the new thread in the DELL Malware Removal Forum. Anything that you need to do there, will be explained to you by the person that is doing your malware removal. ONLY follow that persons instructions. In Malwarebytes, open it and click on logs. It should have produced a log. Post that information, if you can in the same thread and explain that Malwarebytes found these 66 items. They will know what to tell you to do from there. Make sure to mention that you have a file with no program associated with it and mention the number you posted.
The trained volunteers there are really better equipped to help you get everything back in order. Just make sure to follow the instructions and if in doubt, please ask them questions.

dg8,
Go to start, control panel, folder options, files. Uncheck the box that says hide extensions for known file types.
Now go to the file in question and please tell us the file extension. (Examples: .exe .pps .doc .xls)

dg8,
If you can post the exact error message, it would be helpful. Also post the make and model of your computer and operating system.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set association control panel
