toooooo many programs automatically launch on startup

HEEEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!!! computer  illiterate!    AOL was very helpful and told me the reason why my husband can't play party poker without being disconnected every 5 minutes is the fact that there are 32 porgrams running and I need roughly only 12!!!! Great! but they could only tell me how to delete the unecessary  ones for that time period. They said Dell would have to give me further directions to solve the problem of getting rid of them for good.   FIVE hours, yes you heard right, FIVE hours later, this is where I wound up !!!!
WHERE is GOONBOY ??????? I don't know how but I read one of his messages.
Let me continue. I was on hol d   for 48 minutes with Dell to hear it would cost $239 for a contract. Can't do that . Then, on another hour to hear it's $99 for a one time help.    THEN tried tech support online and it wouldn't let me sign up to ask a question because it said I was someone else.  !!!!!!! I need help.  I do think AOL was VERY helpful in telling me I need Dell to actually do the procedure but need to know for sure. I can't spend that money I'd just as soon throw the computer away!!!
HELP GOONBOY or anyone.  Thank you for listening!

Start>Run> type "msconfig" without the quote and go the the Startup tab and post back what is starting up.  As a quickie, you can go to Start>All Programs>Startup and delete everything in that folder do do the former.

if i may piggieback on this post, i have the same problem.  well, simply more start up than what i want, like quicktime, etc.  i will post the programs that appear in my msconfig, if someone could help by saying which ones need to be left on the startup command.  also, does removing a program from teh startup list affect the program in any way? thanks.

jusched (java update scheduler?), issch (installschield updater), ISUSPM, igfxtray, hkcmd, ehtray, tfswctrl, WLTRAY, quickset, Apoint, iTunesHelper (what does this program even do?), qttask (quicktime), ccApp (Symantec/Norton), SNDMon, WCESCOMM (for linking iPaq 'palmpilot', is this necessary if i am not going to link up?) DSAgnt (dell support agent).

i just assume that if i ditch itunes and java, if i need them to open later then they will open without problem, just maybe take an extra second or so.  is this basically correct? in the startup folder were 3 shortcuts: digital line detect, microsoft office, and quickbooks update agent.  i could delete these shortcuts but that wouldnt change anything, right?

Go to the startup folder first.  But for sure ditch the ITunes, java, & Quicktime.

Carol47...

While it will not hurt to kill unnecessary processes, in your case it may well not correct the issue either.

This is not nearly as problematic running XP as was earlier editions of Windows...and...32 processes are most certainly not "too many" as AOL stated and in fact, is a fairly low number on today's machines.  To make the point, this computer presently has 45 processes running with no detectable impact whatsoever.  I suspect you will ultimately find that your choice of internet service is providing a less than stellar connection to the internet.
