taxman,

I took the liberty of doing a search for "data transfer" on our forums, and it yielded several pertinent threads.  One of them should help you.  The search box is above this to the left/  I tried to include a link to the search results I got, but it's not working for some reason.

Thank you,
Todd

If you are transferring programs from a Windows XP computer to a Vista computer, SOME programs can be transferred over using a special Microsoft utility.  Other programs will have to be installed using the program's installation program, you can't copy them from one PC to another.

If you want to transfer programs from an XP machine to an XP machine or from an older Operating System to XP or Vista you will have to reinstall the programs, you will ONLY be able to copy over user data (e.g. wordprocessing files, music, pictures, etc).

HERE is the link to the "Windows Easy Transfer Companion".

THIS LINK is the instructions on how to use the Windows Easy Transfer Companion and a list of programs that can be transferred.

Members have reported horrid results using easy transfer software.

You are better off doing a copy paste to an external usb hard drive, the copy paste files onto Vista PC

As you can see in the link the Programs that they say can be transfered is very limited, you are better off reinstalling the latest Vista compatible program on that PC.

If you have a favorite XP program that does not have a Vista friendly version yet, try the method below to install and use it in Vista.

Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista that are for XP,2000,NT4,98,95

Right click on the setup.exe file for the software/driver you are trying to install and select the compatibility Tab
Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and then select XP, or whatever OS the software was designed for, in the drop down box, Tick "run as Administrator" if it is available, hit OK
Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go well and install the drivers/Software you need.

If the exe installs software for the device, or you have installed software only, you need to navigate to the program folder where it installed, then do the compatibility thing again for the program executable.

I do not guarantee all drivers or software to work but a large percentage do..

Good luck.

If the Software/ installer (exe file) is on CD, copy the entire contents of the CD to a folder in Vista, then do the compatibility thing.

There is no compatibility mode for .msi installers
16 bit programs will not run on Vista
