Transfer Outlook Express 6 messages

Hi - I'm trying to transfer my e-mail messages from my desktop, running XP Home to my work laptop running 2000 Pro.  I can't use the Export function - it will only send the messages to Outlook or Exchange.  I've tried creating the Mail Backup that Microsoft recommends but everytime I go to import what I think I've backed up 2000 Pro tells me there are no messages to transfer.  Has anyone got a solution?

Thanks in advance for you help!

Beatrice57,

Copy the entire folder containing the *.dbx files on your desktop to removable media (CD or Zip disk). On the laptop open Outlook Express and go to File|Import|Messages|Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and browse to the folder you copied. If all the *.dbx files are present (and folders.dbx is required for the import to work) the messages should be imported. You didn't mention the Windows Address Book, but it can be moved in the same manner (copy *.wab to removable media, the use File|Import on the laptop to import it).

Thank you for the information.  I did that and I keep getting the message that there are no messages to import - but I'm pointing right to the file with the dbx folders. I can see the dbx folders and they have the Windows logo as their icon.  I'm going from Win XP Home to Win 2000 Pro but have the identical version of OE6.  When I'm in OE6 on the laptop (one I want the files transferred to) I click on File/Import/Messgaes the click on the Store Directory - the radio button near the bottom, then Browse to the folder where the dbx files are and get the above message.  I've also tried closing OE6 and copying the dbx files from the CD to the new dbx folders - this totally hoses OE6.  Can't open or do anything with it.  I'm stuck.

Again, thanks for your help - any other suggestions?

Beatrice57,

Have you created any *.dbx files with the names of the ones you are attempting to import? For the import all that should be in the target folder are the default files (Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, Deleted Items, Drafts).

Total message import is illustrated here. If this is not successful, individual file import is illustrated here.

Thank you so much for the e-mail and the examples.  Although I had tried them before I tried following your instructions, step by step, but no luck.  Everytime I tried to import I get the message that there are no messages, yet the CD shows the .dbx files, albeit with a Windows icon.  When I try copying files I totally hose OE - can't open the folder into which I tried copying.  I get a message that the system may be low on memory.  My "home" system, where the messages are loctaed is running Win XP Home - the laptop is running Win 2000 Pro - both with identical versions of OE6.  I tried copying one folder to a floppy to avoid Roxio's Drag to Disc but even that didn't work on an import attempt.  I guess I'm just not savvy enough to understand how to do this.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know, if not that's OK - thanks for your help.
