Trouble accessing a web site

Question

I am having issues connecting to http://www.fidelity.com with IE from my laptop. When trying to connect to the site I get the 'Cannot find server' message. This seems to be the only site I cannot seem to access. If I use Mozilla's Firefox, I can access the site.   I believe I may have made a change somewhere that would have caused this to happen, but cannot seem to find out what I did that would cause this problem to occur.   If anyone has any ideas or knows what I may have done to cause this problem to happen, any and all help would  be greatly appreciated.   Thanks.

Try opening Internet Explorer, then go to Tools > Interenet Options and setting the Security and Privacy back to their default levels. Steve

Sorry, that did not make any difference. I set privacy to allow all cookies. Secutiry from left to right is Medium, Low, Low, and High. For some reason I can't seem to change the first and last setting. I went over to someone else who has the same settings and he was able to visit the web site.

Let me also add, that I can go to http://personal.fidelity.com . However, when I click on the fidelity.com logo to go to the main web page, I get the "Cannot find server" message too.

If anyone knows anything, please help me out. Also, I am on AIM as garou30 so you can feel free to msg me, this way may be more effective. Thank you.

Ok...I think I may have something that may point to the culprit if anyone has an idea. It looks like this only happens when I attempt to go to an https site.

None of that worked either. I was unable to do the sfc scan. I put the XP with SP2 in the drive (the one that came with my Dell) and it said it couldn't find any of the files, so I skip that whole step.

None of the other steps seemed to work either. This is getting very frustrating.

If none of the MSKB worked. as a workaround,  use a different browser like Firefox .

I have not seen a message stating that sfc could not find any files. Is it possible that you didn't place a space after sfc in the command sfc /scannow? Additionally, in most cases you will not be prompted to insert the XP reinstallation CD to run System File Checker.

Never seen sfc not find files either. IF you havent done it Already register the dll files in that article it usually works for me. Also if you have norton firewall turn it off and try again.

I get a window that says : 'Files that are required for Windows to runproperly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD Now. When I put in the windows xp pro with sp2 that was provided with my laptop I purchased from Dell, The same message as above is displayed. When I click on the 'More Information' button, I get the following message: 'Possible reasons for this problem: - you have inserted the wrong CD - the cd-rom drive in your system is not functioning' I know I have the right cd in it, and I know my drive is working, so I am at a loss. As for the suggestion prior, I do use Firefox and I can access https sites with no problem. However, there are some secure site I have to access only with IE because Firefox will not work on those sites. Otherwise I would care less but this is getting very frustrating and the last thing I want to do is reinstall everything. Thanks all and any other ideas are greatly appreciated and attempted. Addendum: Well, I just finished re-installing the whole darn thing. Bad thing is that I am still unable to access any https sites. I am ready to throw this thing out the freaking window. Lets not throw it out the window quite yet :). First off if mozilla works whats wrong with using that? or even netscape. Also what do you mean by reinstalling? all of windows? and if so was it a format reinstall. I think it is likely some program having an impact on internet explorer. Therefore if you have any security programs on the system for now try removing them. Or try to connect to the sites in safe mode with networking presuming your isp supports that.
