Where are you getting the SP2 file from? It is possible that the update source is bad if this keeps happening

All programs are genuine.  This will be about the tenth time I have tried this.  Not all at once of course.  Sooner or later I will hopefully find a solution.

Thanks.  The real problem starts after I install SP2. We'll see how it goes this time.

Never tried to do that. I am currently re formatting the hard drive again to re install windows again.

I dunno if this will work but have you tried booting up the system, i think press F8 at the start and boot "From last know good configuration" ???
 
Do you know how to do this?

Ohh just as an after thought, If you dont have a legal version of Windows XP and you update to SP2 ive heard some funky things can start going wrong.
 
Hopefully this was a once off error in the update.

I finally learned that I could get a copy of SP2 from microsoft.  I was hoping this would fix it, but same problem.
