Trouble installing QuickBooks on new Dell

The Quickbooks 2003 program begins installing and then I get this error: Component: JavaRuntimeEnvironment Files; Filegroup: JRE_LIB; File: D\qbooks\data2cab; Error: Data error (clyclic redundancy check)  Then the installation stops and it tells me it is cancelling install. I have read all the messages that seem to be similar, but none that will help me. I really need this program installed because I am a church treasurer and all our books are set up with this program. I hope someone can help.

Is Java installed on the machine and if so is it the latest version?

I did a search and there were several java applications, some of which were transferred from my old computer. There was MSjavax86, javaws, and also three copies of javaRuntimeEnvironment 1.5.0 which were in my "downloaded files". The message says they are installed, but that is probably on the old computer.
Is there a specific name of a file I should look for? There were 131 in all.
Thanks for answering.

Thanks for your reply. I did as you suggested. Then I picked up the disc to reinstall and noticed there is a crack in it. I suppose this could have been the problem to begin with. It has been carefully handled so I don't know how this happened. QuickBooks are out of the 2003 replacement disc, so I am told I have to upgrade. Do you know if cracked discs can be repaired?

El-an, according to this link it is most likely the disk that is the problem. http://seventhheavens.wordpress.com/2006/04/18/clyclic-redundancy-check/ .There is a link for a disk check utility here but I dont know if it will be of any use to you.

Thanks for the information. I downloaded the cd check program and tried it on my disc. I guess it is damaged too much to fix. So I am undecided what to do. If I upgrade to QB 2006, it will not be compatible with Vista, should I upgrade Windows. If I get QB 2007, it will not be compatible with Windows XP Home, which I now have. But I thank everyone who has given help here. This is a great forum!

Quickbooks 2007 will work with XP

Q: On which operating systems will QuickBooks 2007 run?
A: QuickBooks 2007 system requirements will run on Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server/XP and the new Windows Vista, but will not run on older versions of Windows operating systems, which includes Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4.0 (SP6a). Improvements in QuickBooks 2007 requires features found only in recent Windows operating systems (2000/2003 Server/XP/Vista).

See link at intuit for details .. above was copied from there

Thanks so much -- I feel pretty dumb not searching into these things for myself, but I sure do appreciate your sharing those links so I could get the real information. Going with the 2007 will probably be the smart thing over the long run, as even if it has glitches at first, it should run okay in the end. And it will be Vista compatible.

The biggest difference between XP Home and XP Pro
are the abilities to apply Group Policies to User Accounts
and the ability to Join A Domain .. other than that, they are
Identical and will work fine with the Quickbooks Program.

There are other differences, but if you are using the progam
for home use it will not matter.

This link describes all the differences between Home & Pro

What they mean here (underlined section) is Windows 2000 or 2003 Server or Windows 2000 - 2003 XP or Vista .. it says nothing
about needing XP Pro to be able to run the program

Thanks for the link. I read the following and thought it not a good idea to put it on my home computer:

  • Win2000, WinXP Pro, WinXP Home (Not recommended), Windows Vista, Windows 2000 server, and Windows 2003 Server

I copied this from the website you had a link to. I am sure people who are quite savvy with computers could make it work, so for that I am sure you are right. When I see the "Not recommended", I worry that I would have endless trouble. I talked to a QB representative today, and she agreed that it was not recommended for XP Home because of the complex nature of the program. I would be willing to go for the newer version if I thought it would work on my XP Home because they are the same price, and I would be ready for Vista down the road.
