Trouble with restart

I have had my vista home premium system for 3 months and run into this issue several times.  My system will lock up and refuse to do nothing--not even cursor control.  I may have only 1 web page open for email at the time and system resources show 2.5 gb of available ram so it is not a memory issue.   I will try to do a restart or even a shut down and nothing happens--I have to do a hard shutdown , ie. hold power button down for 5 seconds and then reboot.  Recently I was not even having a problem but getting ready for bed and I hit restart and saw a screen saying "logging off" and I left the room.  The next morning -8 hrs. later I came into the room and saw the pc was still locked at the "logging off" point.  It had tried to log off for 8 hours--this is absurd.

Has anyone run into this type of issue and what might I try to fix this?  Thanks.

a couple of things i would check:

1. it could be a ram/memory issue.  i would run a memory diagnostics check to make sure.

2. it could be a software/hardware incompatibility issue.

3. it could be a virus.

perhaps some more information on your system might be useful in helping to find a solution.

Ok

Go to start  > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > On the left pane choose Advanced tools

Then You will see 1 or more issues

And I'm sure you will find the problem and the solution.

Good Luck

Thanks for the information.  I have gone to those tools and see a lot of information - more than I really have any idea how to process( a lot of items listed in an event log) but I will go after each item one at a time. Hopefully, I will learn something working through this issue.
