Turning off computer

When I select turn off computer my maching just sets there with the hour glass.  I have to do ctrl/alt delete and choose shutdown from the task manager and then it shuts down.  Any idea what is wrong

This can be caused by so many things :smileysad:

Here are some suggestions to start with
1. Disable all unnecessary startup entries in msconfig
Start/Run and type in
msconfig
OK
Startup Tab

Keep the page open then go to link below. It will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. It will also identify any malware.  Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup"  Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

2. Here is a good troubleshooter.

3. One of the reasons can be something not shutting down when it is supposed to.
If shutdown hangs at “Saving Your Settings” this MS fix unloads your Profile to allow shutdown

4. Another common cause is the Nvidia Driver Helper service

5. Try turning off/disabling each of these, one at a time, and see if any better
Automatic Updates
Messenger
Antivirus  (remember to re-enable it again at startup)
Remove network card if present
Remove peripherals

Try these and see if anything helps

The above links are good ones but what is basically hapenning is the shutdown sequence is looking for a file or program that has become corrupt or is missing.

Look in the Event Viewer.
