udfreader_xp driver and system instability

I cannot resolve a driver issue that is causing instability on my Dimension 2350. The instability is not consistent, as the system will run crash-free for many days. The error report sent to Microsoft after each crash states that I have a device driver problem.

The Error Log states with each start up: "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: UdfReader_xp."

Twice I have downloaded and installed the patch for the Easy CD Creator offered by Dell. However, the error log continues to give the message as reported by the Service Control Manager.

In the System Info, Software Environment, it states that the udfreader is started, but the udfreader_xp is not.

Am I targeting the wrong driver? I never receive the blue screen or have the system simply go black and shut off after any cd-rom activity, a device I rarely use. It tends to be while I'm online, especially right after I've gone online.

I've run belarc and AdAware. The only updates to my XP Home SP2 configuration have been the usual Windows and Norton's updates and I began using Firefox, but the problem occurred before adding Firefox.

Please ask for any system info I have not offered.

The UDF "reader" may be an old program you installed, not something from Roxio.  I recall having to have a UDF reader program back in the Win 98/ME days to read old "Adaptec" Direct CD formatted CD's on a PC other than the one it was made on.  Windows XP, I don't think, requires that and may be the problem.

If the 2350 originally came with some OS other than XP, it may have came with the UDF reader and if you just "upgraded" to XP the UDF reader is probably still on there.

Use the Windows search function and see if you can find the udfreader and if you do, rename it to something such as "oudfreader" (or whatever it's actually called) and see if that fixes the error.

I forgot to add that Dell initially sent my tower without the promised cd burner, only a read-only cd-rom. They shipped the burner for me to install. The reader software was installed by Dell and the burner software by me from the Roxio disc.

I hope that clears the mud a little.

I changed the udfreader_xp name as suggested, but it looks as though it is still reporting it as failed to load. The sys info now states the udfreader_xp is "unavailable".

When looking at the properties of the two readers, I noticed that the udfreader_xp was created 12/02 and modified 11/04, whereas the udfreader was created and modified on 11/04. In fact, both have an internal name of udfreader_2k.sys. with a product name of Drag-to-Disc. Is this pertinent to my problem?

Btw, my current XP Home Edition was the standard Dell issue with my 2350. I only added the SP2.

"Drag to Disc" is the name Roxio started using for "Direct CD".

I just looked at mine and it does have the udfreader.sys file in the Windows directory.  It also looks like it may have been installed by Roxio.

You may want to completely uninstall Roxio then try installing it by the following procedure and see if that helps (rename the udfreader file back to it's original name first).

1. Uninstall Roxio using the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.

2.  Manually delete the Adaptec folder in Program Files folder

3. Manually delete the Adaptec Foldder in Program Files\Common Files.

4. Restart Windows (Important do not skip this step)

5. Install Roxio as provided by Dell (Windows XP may tell you this is incompatible but seclect the option to continue installing), but BEFORE you attempt to use it, download and install any Easy CD Creator 5 BASIC updates from the Roxio Site.

6.  Restart Windows.

See if this corrects it.

The Reader is part of V5 or before. From V6 on, it is never installed from the program.

It is part of every D2D formatting and will offer to install when no reader is present. Since XP has a reader as part of the OS, it should never be installed on any XP machine.

Sometimes a D2D disc has failed and a user will 'voluntarily' install the reader if the offer pops up…

Thank you for trying to help me on this issue. I performed the tasks as instructed, but am still getting a driver error, not to mention a flurry of new BSOD messages, including Page_fault_in_non-paged_area (address 806EE77A, base 00000001, date stamp 00000000), IRQL_not_less_or_equal and Bad_pool_header. Today it was completely different. It came on with a chkdsk for consistency, then a crash. I have never seen this before. The error log stated NTFS (file structure corrupt) and a system error code 000000d1 with a listing of four parameters and their codes.

The network diag. has my mailserver as Failed from time to time and today it passed, but the WAN Miniport (IP) Failed.

I'm going to reinstall my mail program, try rolling back each driver and research the error messages in the different forums.

Thanks again.
