Unable to get BITS service functioning!

I'm running XP Pro on Dell Dimension 8200 w/ Service Pack 2.
Since Jan 13 ,07  I am unable to download any MS Updates either manually or through the Auto/Updater. After countless hours with technician the problem was narrowed down to BITS service. All other services are running fine. As I am at the last leg of this issue (before I go down with the ship!!!)  is there anything that can be done beside reinstalling XP Pro platform?
 
I need and appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.

You may have malware or worse on your PC.
 
 
Go to this forum http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack  and read the RED link at the top and then post your log on that forum along with what you have stated here, also post the Model of Dell you have and the OS Version.

Thanks for the suggestion...downloaded the hot fix  KB923845 from MS, nstalled it, restarted my computer, checked the services for BITS. Still cannot start it!  Any other alternative suggestion from anyone???

Thanks for all the info. Tried all of the above--less reformatting my hard drive..... (Unfortunately I have a lot of important material on it so, I will let it pass for now.
I wish Mr. Gates would read the predicament many of us have with Windows Updater!!!  If they make the goods---they should be able to fix it!
 
In light of all fairness---this is grossly unfair!
