Unable to install Windows components

Hi,
I purchased inspiron 700 just 5 days ago. I am trying to install IIS (Internet Information Services) from the Windows components (Control Panel/Add remove programs).

The installation started and hung in the middle. I left the machine on for 3 hours and nothing happened and finally I had to shutdown manually.

So IIS installation is incomplete and mmc snap-in does not open IIS.

I also tried installing Visual Studio.NET 2003 prerequisites CD and I am unable to install completely. It installs half way and does not perform anything. I am stuck here not knowing what to do.

I need to install Visual Studio.NET for my development. I cannot do it until IIS is successfully installed.

Thanks,
Anand

some people can disagree, but, imo, it is a good idea to reformat a new computer, though that may be complicated if your new dell did not come with a win xp cd so that you can reinstall windows..

if it did come with a win xp cd, i would try reformatting.. if it didn't, call dell and scream and shout about the dead paperweight they sent you, and tell them you need a win xp cd to solve dell's problem..

then you will have to sit for a few days (at least) and wait for dell to solve two of its problems, shipping you the win xp cd that they did not ship in the first place..

or, you can just call dell and tell them you are returning the product since it is all "messed" up, and dell did not provide the win xp cd necessary to resolve the problem (if they did not ship a win xp cd with the computer)

IIS does not come with XP Home. I hope you are using Windows XP Professional. If you deleted the XP temp files then you'll need the XP Pro install CD placed in the CD drive when you add components.

I don't know how badly damaged your VS.Net install is. VS.Net can be very pervasive - to the point that you may want to consider reformatting the HD and reinstalling the OS.

Also before installing VS.Net you need to have IIS installed and the .Net Framework installed. Otherwise you will have problems with missing components with VS.Net (ie: it will complain about not finding files because the file paths are incorrect).

I would restore to before the VS.Net install was started, install IIS, and download the current version of the .Net Framework from M$ and install it. Don't bother with the older version of .Net framework that is on the VS.Net discs.

Another good item to have installed for VS.Net - although not required - is Microsoft SQL Server 2000. I have SQL Server 2000 Developer installed. It can cost about $50 (USD). It installs after IIS. It also has prerequisites.

It's the full version - except you are restricted from commercial/business software sales/deployment.

Hi all,

Thanks for your reply. I have XP professional with SP2 loaded. Is there a way to unstall windows components. Following are the problems I am having with this laptop. So far its been a rough ride.

1) WIndows Components installation incomplete and unsuccessful

2) Unable to install .NET framework 1.1 from the computer. The progress bar is half the way from long time.

3) Any windows updates from internet does not complete it properly. Nothing happens for hours and hours.

What should I do? Its very frustating.

Thanks,

Anand
