Maxd, many thanks for the help!  I am curious if this file is left out of XP system by accident (I have a Dell 4500) or might this be a consequence of trying to update to Service Pack 1 which I had to recover from due to an intermittant pro with USB keyboard not being recognized at systemm start up?  Seems unusual that this file is missing. Thanks again,  Charlie Roy (islandeagle).

Still having the problem, attempted to expand sysoc.in_ in E: \i386\ and got unable to open file message (E is my CD drive).  Searching around I found sysoc in c:\windows\i386\.  It is editable by notepad so suspect it has been expanded already.  I thought of creating a c:\windows\inf\ directory and copying the sysoc file in to it, but being afraid of creating a problem with my XP I thought I would see if anyone has an opinion on this. Looks like \I386\sysoc.in_ was completly copied (and expanded) over to my system including the directory.  Also, when attempting to add/remove windows components i get the "unable to load information file" message.  There is no detail info on where system looked for this file (would be helpful I think).  Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I am beginning to think that this and many other problems are a result of the install of SP1a and/or its subsequent removal.  There does not seems to be any "housekeeping" done regarding SP1a, ie, missing files, directories, files in wrong directory, etc.  MS Knowledge Base Article - 810090 suggests waiting for the Windows XP service pack.  This makes me curious about when the next service pack will be available.  Does anyone have knowledge when the next service pack will be available?  Thanks in advance, Charles Roy.

SP1(a) *is* the current service pack for XP. It appears you have some catching up to do. I suggest you first Enter this command from Start/Run: sfc /scannow(note space); don't put XP cd in unless you're prompted.

Then install SP1(a);the (a) means you will get no Java with this SP. Then go to the WindowsUpdate site and download all 'Critical' patches. Then try your Add/Remove. If it still doesn't work try the Expand command again, this time from a Command prompt.

Thanks for the input MaxD.  I miscommunicated about my problem. I had the MS KB article number 810090 as a result of installing SP1a.  It seems that MS agrees that there is a problem with USB devices with SP1a installed, in my case, my keyboard (became dead after loading of XP SP1a, an intermittant problem as would sometimes work after reboot again, about 1 out of 4 tries).   Do not have the problem on windows XP w/o the service pack.   MS suggests waiting until next SP is available, which will include fix.  By the way, bought new keyboad just in case, no help.  My add/remove windows components problem is with my XP system w/o any service packs installed, but, based on what i am finding as i scan for an answer to the add/remove problem, it seems that the problem may be caused by the installation and/or the removal of SP1a.  All I wanted to do initially was add the windows fax software when i encountered the missing master information file.  I do find the file (sysoc) in the c:\I386 folder along with more than 9000 files.  It is already expanded and quite readable with note pad and there is no c:\windows\inf directory in my system.  Since I am running fine at this porint and am not desperate for the winfax software, i think i will wait for the next service pack unless more info comes to light.

I'm surprised that they would suggest to fly without SP1 and not try to TS it further with you. If you have run the sfc command previous to attempting the SP1a install then do as you wish. The SP does include security updates including IE. I hope you are not making online purchases or online banking without having Windows up-to-date. The next SP will probably be another 2-4 months. Most people haven't had the USB problems that SP1 can cause and there probably is a workaround for you but...

Best of the New Year and belated Merry Christmas !

Yes, I was a bit suprised by MS position on this regarding SP1 for XP also.  I do install all of the other updates that are recommended along with current virus protection.  I live in the sticks (North Olympic Peninsula in WA state), where my max moden speed is 26.4 kbs (phone co. limit).  I am told that the worm and virus hackers are partial to broadband capable users, plus have protection thru my ISP which seems effective so far.  So will wait for SP2 in several months.  May be that MS knows that security is really not that effective in SP1, therefore, they want to get SP2 out asap.  I suspect that security is a far greater problem in the LAN area, where one is connected thru many different portals.

Many thanks for you interest and support and a Happy New Year to you also!!!
