My problem is similar. Using Internet Explorer the PDF files open but when I attemp to close them I receive an error message concerning a directX file connected to Adobe and IE6 shuts down. In fact, it freezes up and I must exit the program using task manager. Any body have any ideas?
to no avail. Creating a new user account will allow PDF files to open in IE in that account, but it doesn't tell me what the original problem is. I have 3 IE 6.0 add ons that I can't manage (they are disabled) after installing SP2 in my original account.
Other things I've tried are disabling both Microsoft's and Norton's firewalls, security features, and antivirus software (I use Norton's). I've also uninstalled and reinstalled possible problem software including Acrobat Reader (cause pdf.ocx is disabled), all of Norton's products (antivirus add on is disabled), Windows SP 2 and IE 6.0. I've made sure all updates have been installed. If anybody else is having this problem, or know what the problem is, I'd like to hear from them.
Well, I think I finally got the problem fixed for now. I still don't know how the registry add-on policies got so messed up. I've got at least 100 CLSIDs listed on the Add-on List in the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER) all disabled (value=0) even though the Add-on List Policy using gpedit.msc is NOT CONFIGURED! The new User Account's HKEY_CURRENT_USER did not have any CLSIDs listed, so it worked fine. So the group policy definitions and the register keys were out of sync.
I've found a work around for my problem. It's a nuisance but such is life with computers. I am able to enable/disable the activex addon PDF.OCX. I must enable the addon before viewing the PDF document and disable the addon before closing the document. This allows me to continue browsing with IE6. I wonder if an updated addon is in order.

I'm having exactly the same problem. The PDF.OCX add-on has been disabled and I can't update it or enable it. I've even tried everything covered in
