Unexpected shutdown in windows 10
I have a Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop (windows 10 home) which I acquired last month. I put the computer in power save mode by pressing the button on the keyboard that has a half moon symbol. It makes the computer to “go to sleep” so to say. But after that it wouldn’t “awake” and I had to press the power button to turn it off and then press it again to turn it on. When the PC turned on it would not give any messages that it did not switch off normally earlier. When I had the Vista Pc I would get a message saying that windows did not shut down normally and suggested to run windows in safe mode. I run the checkup utility but it passed. The system history however, shows that there was an unexpected shutdown. What sort of utility test should I run to correct this issue? I mean if the computer shuts down unexpectedly what sort of utilities should I run? In Vista I used to run the check disk but I don’t know in windows 10.

Thanks for your help. I follow the instructions provided. There was no need to update the graphics card, it was already updated. Now the sleep mode works fine. Hopefully it won’t happen again. What I’d like to ask is, do you think that I should run a utility program to correct any possible problems because windows did not shut down properly the last time? Say, if there was a power cut and the computer shut down unexpectedly wouldn’t we have to run a program to check for errors in the hard drive. In vista there was the check disk utility but in windows 10 I can’t find something similar.

You can check a disk for errors in Windows 10 by going to "Properties" for the disk you want to check. Then select the "Tools" tab, and click the "Check" button under the "Error Checking" section. Then follow the prompts.

Unfortunately I’m back. The problem with the sleep mode occurred again. Now I followed the instructions regarding the Power Options. Apart from the Multimedia settings where it’s advised to choose the “Allow the computer to sleep” I found another option “Power buttons and lid” → “power button action” → setting. Right here it was chosen “shut down” but I chose “sleep”. Could you please let me know if that is correct? This option is not mentioned in the instructions. It mentions only the Multimedia settings.
