Boomer Plus,

To answer both of your posts in one, it would be helpful if you were a bit more descriptive of the instability you are attempting to correct. Are you receiving any error messages? What system behavior is the result of the instability? The fact that you have a restore point as old as August 2003 indicates that at least System Restore is not operating properly.

What normal maintenance do you perform on the system? Are you running an antivirus program with updated signatures and do you routinely perform a full system virus scan? Have you used any of the popular programs such as Ad-aware or Spybot to detect and remove spyware? How frequently do you run disk cleanup and/or defrag?

Windows Critical Updates do not affect system stability on a properly working system and since they directly relate to security it is not a good idea to uninstall any of them.

Mr. Denham,

Here are some answers to your questions.

On 5/1//04 when I booted up it said something about the keyboard not working.  Then I got an Error Signature--

BCCode:1000008e BCP1:C0000005 BC2:805A3B22 BCP3:F1B6464C BCP4:00000000 OS Ver:5_1_2600 SP1_0 Product:256_1  This was the 2nd time this error has appeared.

I also found out that my keyboard really did not work so I decided to click my way to System Restore.  I found several points dating back to 8/29/04.  I used that one to restore my system.

One question regarding that--Would it have been possible for me to have changed the settings so that I could go back that far?

I also found notes from 7/11/03 where 4 MS Updates failed:  Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption), Security Update, April 2003 Security Update for O E 6 SP1, and June 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE 6 SP1.

Routine Maintence--probably have run defrag.  Also, found Dr. Watson showed 3 IE errors.  Norton AV full system scan 11/7/03--New virsus definitions 11/12/03 but did not scan at that time.

When I booted up 11/13/04  I received a STOP Error 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0xBF8813D4, 0XF1f77ci4, 0x00000000) as well as win32k.sys - Address BF8813D4 base at BF800000, DateStamp 3f73195d.  I did not boot up again until 4/18/05 and have not gone online yet.

System Information revealed 5 application errors.  File Versions showed 2 dll files missing from IE and 1 inf file was not available.

I have not used any programs like Adaware or Spybot.

Regarding stability--I booted it up several times yesterday to look for clues that may prove helpful.  I got no error messages or crashes.  However, I know that it may be only a matter of time before it does.

If more info is needed, please let me know.  Boomer Plus

logs of failed install of critical updates  are not a problem, usually one just tries again. You could see what updates really are installed by running qfecheck,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;282784

Then go to Windows update and install all the missing ones (any installed after that the date of that system restore point will have been uninstalled by system restore)

Also, if you really have not updated your virus definitions since 11/12/03 you are living very dangerously if connected or reading e mails.

Regarding stop notice 8E, see

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Usually associated with hardware problems or BIOS conflicts.

Some of the dates in your post look odd: Where I am 11/13/04 has not yet arrived and 4/18/05 is in the distant future, so it is not clear to me exactly when you got the above error message. It could have been a one off glitch if it has not recurred.

If you can at present boot up normally I would suggest that you start by checking your system files

click start, run, type sfc /scannow  [note space between c and /]. click OK. It may ask for your XP disk if it finds system files are missing or corrupt.

Then , with a firewall on, go to windows update, let it scan, and install any critical and security updates it offers, if many, just do one or two at a time.

Have you fixed or replaced the keyboard?

I must disagree with your statement that the critical updates can not cause problems on a well running machine.

I Have a Dell 550T with Windows 98 SE. I recently added a critical security update and started to have problems accessing help links in MS Publisher 2000 and Word 2000. The error was a script error. I uninstalled the update and all was good again. Pot Luck ? I do not think so.

JRosenfeld,

Those dates should read 11/13/03 and 4/18/04.  I did not use that computer during that time because I knew I wouldn't  have time to work with the problems.  I have been using one with 98SE.  Yes, I will definitely update my virus definitions.

No, I don't think it was just a glitch.  There is a history of errors which I did not expand upon.

No, it's the same keyboard.

I'll look into your suggestions.  Thanks, Boomer Plus
