Just tried it. I must have 40 files listed there, most are exe files. How do I know the one that is running, and how do I know the ones I can safely delete.

You must be looking on the Processes tab. Many of those are essential Processes that must be running in order for Windows to function. Is there anything shown the Applications tab?
The box will usually say which program is not shutting down properly. If you post that it will help. In any case as you are shutting down it is OK to click on end now.
