unknown file on desktop

Question

Dell Dimension 8400 Windows XP I have a file on my desktop labeled with only a symbol...'~'  not the quotes, only the symbol.  I have no clue what it is.  I have Mcafee...spybot....adaware.  I have looked at its properties and it tells me nothing...its a file....its name is ~...it is listed as C:\documents and settings\myname\desktop. Any thoughts????  I have put it in the recycle bin(didn't permantely delete ) but soon it will reappear on the desktop I
