unmountable boot volume problem

I have an inspiron 1501, and last night it gave me the message:

unmountable_boot_volume, and could not get pass it, so I called

the support line, and they helped me get my system started

again after running diagnostics test, it's not a hardware problem

but they want me to back up all my files, and want to do a

re-install????

Is there anything else I can try, before going to that, ?

Right now, it's up and running but just not sure for how long?

I have found info on the net, as what to do if I get the

error message again, but nothing about what to do, now

that my system is up.

Hope someone can help me?

Thanks

Josee

Unmountable_Boot_Volume can be a corrupt file system... or  dying hard drive.

Tech support is right on this one. Back up your files NOW. I mean right NOW. Do not pass go, do not procrastinate at the risk of permanent data loss.

Once you're done with that, you can try running a chkdsk /r on it, it could be just full of errors. If that doesn't work, prepare for an OS reinstall.

Thank you for your fast reply,

I have backed up all my files, thank you,

My question now is: to run that "chkdsk/r" do I just

shutdown and restart the computer with the recovery disk in?

or do I have to do, something else first.?

Since it's XP, click Start -> Run and type in cmd

In the black window that appears type in chkdsk /r
Type Y when it asks to run on restart.
Restart computer.

Hi there,

I now have a new problem with my system, and not sure if it's

related to the first one or not.

it's now giving me the following error message:

RUNDLL

An exception accured while trying to run "Ixctafcn.dll,

Devise monitor request with a numeric id that keeps

changing every time it pops up

3 times so far, but the day is young....lol

Do you think it's related, or is my system

going into "cardiac failure" again

Thanks

Josee
