Updates for windows vista

I have noticed that if I manually run the windows updates for windows vista, all but one of the updates is checked. The unchecked update is 977165. Any reason why an update would be unchecked? A safety precaution since this update has appeared to cause a bsod for xp users.

There are no symptoms on my machine to indicate that I have a rootkit or any malware on my system. Since the update is not checked by default for me then it's safe to download and install it?

It really gets me about how people don't protect their PCs at all. I think that this should be considered a valuable lession learned for those that were infected with a rootkit.

They did pull KB977165 from automatic updates, but left it as a manual option.

Latest chatter on the web says that particular update only crashes PC's that are already infected with a rootkit - XP just got hit the hardest -  but the virus/spyware folks would know more about that than I do.

I can't say if it's "safe" or not.

On the one hand, most people installed that update with no problem at all.    On the other hand, rootkits are designed to be stealthy - a clever one won't show obvious symptoms.

As for whether that update is critical or not - they're all important.   Problem is,   a month or two later the bad guys figure out a way around that patch, and MS has to start all over again.  It's a never-ending battle.

Only advice I have is, one way or the other, be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best.

As for people not being protected - seat belt laws have been in place for 25 years or more, and they're proven to save lives, but people still refuse to use them.  Go figure.
