Upgrade from Windows 98 to 2000

I have an older Dell 4100 computer that was loaded with Windows 98. I just purchased a new Dellinspiron

530s which is great. The problem is I was going to give our old computer to my inlaws who have never had a computer (they just want to try out email and the internet) so I though I would upgrade the 4100 to Windows 2000 becuase I had the program but never loaded it. I made the mistake of not upgrading some of the systems on it and now that I have Windows 2000 running on it I can no longer hook up to the internet. I was told that it was because I do not have the proper driver on it. I am no computer expert so I am not sure how to go about doing this. I did look at the drivers on this site for that model but I don't see what I should download. I assume that I will have to download it to the new computer and burn it to disc then load it onto my old computer.

Any ideas or thoughts on this would be a great help!!!

I can't tell you which Win2K drivers are needed as I have no idea what hardware is in the PC.

However, when doing a new install the sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers.

Win2K requires different drivers than what was used on Win98 (the Win98 drivers are not compatible).

The drivers listed on the Dell downloads for Win2K do not include the chipset drivers, but the Win98 listing has them.  Chipset drivers are not (usually) operating system dependent so the Win98 drivers should be useable.

Thank you for your help. I still can't figure out where to find the driver. I go to the find driver tab and enter my model 4100 and it comes up with a list of things. Like applications, Audio, diagnostics etc. are these all drivers? Where do I go to find the Win2K driver? I wish I had better computer skills!

HERE is the Drivers for the 4100 and Win 2K.   The specifically state "driver", such as the listed Audio driver for the Integrated Audio (on the motherboard audio) HERE

I accessed the drivers by Click on Support at the top of the page, selecting "I'm looking for Drivers and Downloads then click on "Choose A Model".

Usually when you don't see specific drivers for things like chipset while you do for audio or video, that means the windows cd already has them. You can check in device manager to see where your question marks are.

When you go to the dell site, they break them down by OS, so you need to change the default, usually XP to 2000 and the list appears.
