flapjackk,

See the steps to take prior to doing the upgrade here.

It is strongly recommended that you do a clean install of XP (which you can do with an upgrade CD) rather than attempting to upgrade over the top of 98. Those upgrades normally result in serious problems.

Hi Denny,

Thanks for your e-mail.  I ran the Upgrade Advisor and it came back with some minor things like re-installing the printer driver etc.

Since I have the full retail WinXP CD, I can just install WinXP and it will wipe out Win98SE automatically and it will have the latest BIOS and drivers etc., right?  Is there anything else I need to pay attention to?  What are some of the things that could go wrong?

Thanks.

flapjackk,

Windows XP will have the chipset drivers for your system but does not include a BIOS for your system. Depending on the system you have you may need to upgrade your BIOS to the latest available for your system prior to installing XP (even if it is isn't required, it is a good idea). The drivers for the remainder of your peripherals (sound card, video adapter, etc.) will also not be included. You will have to locate them. For newer systems Dell will have the necessary drivers available through downloads.

Hi Denny, Thanks for your e-mail.

I did a 'dirty install' of Win98SE, but it didn't help because under Control Panel/Regional Settings, the global map is still frozen and I still can't change the language setting.

Now I have to do a 'clean install' of Win98SE and I have done it before.  But it is different this time because my CD-ROM drive is not working and I install everything from my CD-RW.  The 'clean install' will install the driver for the CD-ROM drive, then I can install other drivers from the CD-ROM drive.  Now the question is that with CD-ROM drive not working, how can I make my CD-RW drive wrok??

(1) If I move the current CD-RW installation folder to my D drive, I don't need to re-install the CD-RW driver because it is already installed on my D drive.  Correct?  For example, if I move my IE60 folder to my D drive, I don't need to re-install IE60 again because I can just launch IE60 from my D drive.

(2) It won't work if I buy an external CD-ROM drive because Win98SE doesn't have the driver for it.  Correct?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
