Upgrading to Windows XP from Windows Me

Yes, am finally getting ready to try upgrading to Windows XP. I have a Dell Dimension 8100 purchased in 2001. I have downloaded/run an Upgrade Report program available from Microsoft which identified hardware/software on my Dimension 8100 that might not work with Windows XP. Here's what the report said:

Hardware That Might Need Additional Files:

- Network adapters (Paradyne Network Device - not currently present)

- Printer (hp psc 900 series)

- Sound, video and game controllers (Santa Cruz (tm) WDM Interface)

Scanners or Digital Cameras That Might Not Work:

- hp psc 900 series

Software That Does Not Support Windows XP

- Java (in Control Panel)

- Santa Cruz Control Panel (in Control Panel)

- Phone Tools

Note: "Before you upgrade to Windows XP, you should remove any incompatible programs if you can. After the upgrade, uninstall for these programs might not work."

Software That Must Be Reinstalled:

- DirectCD 3

- Easy CD Creator 4

((My own comment: I will delete these before installing XP. Then get new software from Roxio later.))

Incompatible Hardware Accessories:

- IntelliPoint (on the Start menu)

Software That Might Not Support Windows XP:

- AVG Free Control Center (A startup program)

- Device Detector (a startup program)

Other Upgrade Information:

- Microsoft Directx 9.0 (you will need to download the DirectX 9.0 update for Windows XP)

That's the report. I know I will need an updated driver for my hp psc 950 (all-in-one). Should that be downloaded before doing the upgrade?  Does it matter? Beyond that, is there anything really preventing me from proceeding with the upgrade?  I also am using a Paradyne ADSL modem (for DSL connection) and a Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router, both of which are compatible with Windows XP.

Would welcome any comments or suggestions before proceeding.  Thank you.

Upgrades are always discouraged here, there just too many problems that arise after an upgrade.

Back up your important data and do a "Clean Install" of XP.

Clean install means you delete the C partition, then create a new C partition to install XP on.

A more mundane matter: The system requirements call for a Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor. I have A Dell M991 Color Monitor, but the documentation I have does not say if it is SVGA or something else (e.g., VGA). Is there any way to check this? I've tried about everything. My monitor is running at 1024 x 768, but don't know if it is SVGA.

Your monitor is fine 1024 x 768 exceeds the 800 x 600 minimum. I'd make sure I had the chipset and network card drivers for XP donloaded to a floppy or cd ready to go before I did anything. It is wise to back up all importantant information  before proceeding.
Since you have ME and a 8100, do a fresh install makes sense if possible but I have done a few ME to XP upgrades and they have worked out ok.
