USB Mouse & Keyboard stop working during reinstall

Question

Dimension 521C running XP pro. Only has USB keyboard & mouse, NO ps2 ports. All hardware was working. Reinstall was due to a software issue. On starting reinstall, both keyboard & mouse work. at 34 min (No, its not the infamous 34 minute problem, but similar I think) the lights on both the KB & mouse go off. It continues until it reaches the screen where it wants user input to select country. And neither keyboard or mouse works. Using the Dell supplied reinstall CD, WinXP Pro SP2 that is supposed to allow reinstallation.   Edit: After fighting this for 3 days I decided that the repair reinstall was not going to work and did a full reinstall. That worked. I still have all of the data, but of course the programs have to be reinstalled to use it. WHY does a full reinstall work when a repair reinstall dosen't? don't they use the same drivers?

I can't believe someone hasn't answered this.

I have the same problem trying to reload an E520.

The Dell CD goes to install the USB drivers "WHICH HAVE NOT PASSED THE WINDOWS LOGO TEST", that you have to respond to and you can't anymore as the keyboard and mouse don't work.

Anybody have a suggestion, my stock XP (No SP) CD Blue screens if I try to load from it ??
