USB Thumb drives not recognized.

I've run into trouble getting my XPS 200 to recognize thumb drives. I continue to get a code 28, and a message from the device driver troubleshooter that it cannot find the driver. These thumb drives work fine on other computers. I've tried the driver reset tool. I ordered teh CD's from Dell, and with the resource CD in the drive, the troubleshooter still couln't find a driver. I chatted with the hardware tech, and am convinced the port is ok, as a smart card reader works in it. At the suggestion of a different forum moderator, I removed the mouse and printer from the rear ports--still no luck, plus had to restore to an earlier point to get the mouse and printer back. the suggestion is that my OS is corrupt, but I'm not anxious to reinstall.

I'd really appreciate help!
