User Account Missing. Is MKBA 308421 the answer ?

My PC is Dell 8300 with Win XP home, IE (ver 6.0.2800.1106) and Norton AV. On Friday 25.06.04 whilst browsing some sites I permitted cookies that appeared to be linked to them. Yesterday, 26.06.04 I created a restore point in the morning and deleted the Temporary Internet Files. Sometimes later I found that my home page which used to be that of my ISP was not on the screen and it was another site. With the assistance from ISP’s help desk the wrong home page and the cookie were deleted and the correct home page was typed in. I also ran Ad Aware to delete the spy ware.

Some hours later I found that of the three users in the system ( Administrator, Guest and Self - Joe_ThePcOwner ) the latter was missing. Though I recreated the original user account RUA), Joe_ThePcOwner, when I log on as the RUA, the PC is not bringing back the previous settings. I also found Norton NAV is not working and files xxxx\NAVAPW32.DLL and 2 others are missing.

I realise I may be able to restore the system to the last restore point and then house clean for the spy-ware etc. I could also find the answer to the NAV problem on the Symantec web site. Is there any other better solution ?

Since drafting the above I have found in Dell forum reference to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 308421. Is the solution in MKBA better than the restore to an old state.idea ?
Thank you in advance for your assistance. With regards Sam

sam2003,

The MSKB article will allow you to open files and folders formerly "owned" by the other account (items such as My Documents) but will not restore any of that account's settings.
