I am trying to backup to a networked hard drive on my home system using the backup utility software that comes with XP home edition, without success. Can it be done?
Thanks,
TD
Sure. Choose back up type as "File" and specify a folder on the network drive as a destination.
As I know Windows has such tool, but I don't like it, as it's rather difficult and un-comfortable to use.
For back up, I prefer Acronis True Image, it has intuitive foolproof wizard. To create full disk image takes me about 15-20 min, also it has the highest compression possibility. Of course, it supports network drive. Highly recommend for the best backup solution.
Sounds straightforward -- except -- when I get to the option of "choosing file," it is "whited out" and I can't access it.
Any advice or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,
td
If you mean that under "Select the backup type" it is showing "File" (and has no other choices available it is because Windows found no other removable storage type thus giving you no choice other than "file") then "File" is already selected.
Now under "Choose a place to save your backup" click Browse and choose a suitable folder on your networked drive. (note: the destination must be a properly shared network resource for it to be available as a backup destination)
P.S. I totally agree with the other poster on using a different backup program. (Windows built in version is limited and kludgy IMO) Acronis True Image is very good.
