Using restore disk on different computer

Hello

This is my first post here so please bear with me.

Can I use my restore disk for my 8400 to reinstall the operating system on my 8250. The hard drive died on the 8250 and money is a little tight or I would purchase the disk from Dell. I have an extra drive to put in the computer but no restore disk.

Thanks for any help

You can request a free set of backup disks
directly from Dell by filling the form out located here:

EDIT:   JackShack beat me to it.

As long as the versions originally on both machines are the same (both XP Home, XP Pro), it's fine.  The license belongs to the machine, not the disk.

Technically what Dell provides is not a restore disk, though.  A restore disk reinstalls everything that came on the machine, but the Dell reinstallation disk Dell only installs the operating system - drivers and applications are on separate disks.    Just in case, here's an overview of how to reinstall, including installing the drivers in the correct order:

So long as the COA stickers on both machines state the same version of Windows there should be no problem.  If one is Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional, it would be a violation of the End User License Agreement to use the reinstallation CD from one machine on the second machine.  The license is the important thing, and the reinstallation CD from your 8400 should work fine on the 8250.
