various apps cannot connect to the internet!

I am running Windows XP sp2 on a Dell Inspiron E1405 notebook. I am having a problem where some programs can connect to the internet, like browsers and AIM, but others cannot. When I try to install updates for AdAware or Nod32, it tells me it can't connect to the internet to find updates. Torrents and p2p clients show no connectivity. Flickr Uploader cannot connect, and tells me I have no internet connection. This happens whether or not I have a firewall on. I made a brand new user account on the same computer to check if it was a setting of mine that was the issue, and my suspicions were confirmed when I saw I was able to connect to the internet with any of these apps on my other account. Any idea what I should do to fix this?

Go here and scroll down to "Copy your user profile"

What you are going to do is create a New user account (be sure to give it admin rights), then copy the old profile (account) to the new one, then when you are happy with the new account, you can delete the old corrupted one.
