Very slow operating performance- (Help)

Hi- I have a dimension 2300 I purchased in 2002 with a pentium 4 & windows xp. My dad was over recently & he said he couldn't believe how slow my system was compared with his. (He has a pentium 3 running on windows 2000). He told me that with such a new system I should have very fast performance.

An example is the SETI at home program I run when the system is not in use. I have logged more than 260 data units with about 10 months run time. Comparing this with other users of the SETI at home system on their stats website -it takes my computer about 9 times as many hours to complete a work unit than other users on the site.

I feel this is true for other programs too. I play simcity 3000 & the computer cannot draw the graphics fast enough to keep up with the game's progress.

I've heard about overclocking systems to increase performance- but I'm unsure how to proceed or what the best course of action is? Please advise.

Thank you,

The Firedragons,

Dell systems cannot be overclocked. How much RAM is installed in your computer? How frequently do you run Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Do you scan your system routinely for spyware?

We need your spec's in order to assist you better.  Always include the spec's...Your system is a rock bottom computer and you may only have the integrated graphics, which eats into you main memory.  If you only have 128 mb of memory the integrated graphic may take as much as 32 mb of it, which leaves you very little to work with.  Though you can operate windows xp with 128 mb, you will see a gain in performance with 512 mb.

You should do the following to help :  Defrag the computer / Download spyware checker such as adaware or spybot and clean out all the spyware stuff on your computer / check for a virus (keep the anti virus software up to date) / you can reformat and re-install the operating system.  Uninstall old programs that you do not need and put them on a disk (cdrw or dvd-rw) .  If you go the reformat route, you will loose everything, so back up what you want to keep.  If you have nortons anti-virus software, this to will slow the system down somewhat.  Check to see whats running in the back ground which also might be slowing things down. You have SETI on your system ?.  Does this program run in the back ground as you work, which may also slow the computer down.
