VFAT, VMM, and 0E errors

I am experiencing occasional VFAT, 0E, and VMM errors. I have tried to remove dust bunnies (and were there dust bunnies!) with compressed air. My machine does not have worms or viruses either according to Stinger.  I have run diagnotics with Dell technical support help and there were no errors. Is the next step to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows ME?

Thanks for info.

If you can supply the full and exact text of the error message(s), we could probably be of more help.

VFAT(01) 0000A646 Error: 0E:0028:C004A36

VMM(01) + 0000C7E2 Error:0E:0028:C000D7E2

An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C000BD99 in VxD VMM(01) + 000AD99. This was called from 0028.C000B4B3 in VxD VMM(01) + 0000A4B3. It may be possible to continue normally.

The addresses are not consistent but change.  I cannot therefore find specific KB article that would apply.

I just got another VFAT error while working on this post but screen came back. Is it time to do the reinstall?

Thanks for info,

Susan

Found this on one of your error messages:

Fatal exception 0E in VXD VMM when launching applications.

After installing the drivers from the version 6.01 Rage 128 driver installation CD the following error message may occur when launching various applications:

"A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00071A in VXD VMM(01)+000061A7"

ATI Technical Support has had previous reports of this issue. In most instances this issue will be resolved by installing the current Rage 128 driver download from web.

Do you have an ATI Rage video card? If so, please go HERE for the latest Catalyst drivers.

No I don't have a Rage video card. Thanks anyway for your time.

These are tough errors to solve unless they are reproducible. For example, if you get an error every time you open a certain program or perform a certain action, then you can narrow it down.

Are you using the most current drivers for your HP printer and the Epson scanner?

I believe my drivers are current. I will probably format my HD and completely reinstall Windows ME. This will take me time so I have been putting it off. I have done this before with Dell's help, so I am not scared to do this. It just takes time for me to get everything back the way I like it. I just hope my problem is not due to loose connections like one MS-MVP suggested it could be.

Happy Holidays!

Let me add a suggestion that will save you some time in the future. Buy Norton Systemworks Pro (about $20), which contains a program called Ghost (also Norton Anti-Virus, the rest of the programs are junk). After you reinstall Windows, drivers, updates and your important applications, make a Ghost backup of your hard drive onto CD-RW or a different partition on your hard drive (Ghost will also prompt you to create a boot floppy).

After you've created this Ghost backup, restoring your hard drive is a five-minute operation.
