Viewing Powerpoint Presentation
Someone sent me an e-mail message with a Powerpoint slideshow and I am unable to view it. I've never had a problem viewing one before. I'm getting the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel." I have Powerpoint Viewer. I went to the Control Panel, clicked on folder options, but don't see what I can use as the "Association".

A .pps extension is Powerpoint Slideshow. PowerPoint (PPT) software will open it as will PowrPoint Viewer if you don't have PowerPoint software (PowerPoint Viewer is free). To get your PPT software to recognize this extension:
- right click on the file and you will see an "Open With" option,
- select that and then scroll until you find Powepoint and highlight that
- also put a check in the box for "Always use the selected program......"

:smileysad:I'm not sure exactly what is happening with Dell/Microsoft. In January I started having problems sending to more than one person using Microsoft Outlook Express which I have used for years. I thought the problem was with my server so I've spent hours online with them to no avail. I finally decided to just make a test and went to yahoo.com, and send the same group of people an e-mail (approximately 15 people) and they ALL received it. Then I got suspicious when this happened with the Powerpoint SlideShow Presentation that I couldn't view on Microsoft Outlook Express and I forwarded that document to my yahoo.com address and had no problem accessing it.
Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are the only Microsoft applications I have and my computer is leased through Dell. Since we have a Compaq computer with the Microsoft Office Suite on it, I do not have Word, Excel and Powerpoint on this computer. I've had more important things to worry about lately (husband's major heart surgery and totaling my car while he was in the hospital) and have just kept on using the yahoo.com. The computer I am using is a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP Service Pack 2. I don't know the exact time the "trial" version of Office Suite ran out, but am beginning to suspect that may have been the time I started having the problem sending my mail. I discovered this problem when folks I normally send to twice or three times a week starting wondering where I was. I would get their mail, but when I "replied all" they weren't receiving mine. Has anyone else had this problem and does it sound like a Microsoft problem to you? I just get so tired and frustrated being on the phone an hour at a time with someone I cannot understand half the time. Please I'm not prejudiced, I would just love to speak with someone whose English was much better than those I have dealt with.

I have only had my Dell Dimension 3000 since last October or so and someone has sent me an important Powerpoint slide presentation on a disc, with only 125 pictures.
I've been going crazy trying to get it to play but all I get is the thumbnail of the first picture. It acts like it is loading and then after 10 minutes or so I get tired of waiting and try to close it. Get the error message "the program is not responding' etc. My computer has Powerpoint viewer, although I did not purchase the thing right after the trial expired.
I thought maybe it was the disc, brought it to work and it works fine on my work Dell computer and it does not even say that it has Powerpoint.
(Sorry I don't know the appropriate terms and have no classroom computer skills either so I'm just try to guess what's going on!)
What would you do about it? I doubt there is any warranty after 9 months since I did not purchase an extension.
I'd really like to show the disc to my mother since it's her sister's memorial service we could not travel to.
