Virtual memory error

Hi I work tech support with a company and I have a user that keeps getting low virtual memory error. He is running a dell latitude D620. I've tried physically updating the amount of virtual memory with inside of windows. I have tried swapping out the memory as well as a fresh install of windows. I have also ran all of the diagnostic tests that are a able to be downloaded from the dell site. All of those test of passed with flying colors. I have also updated the amount of Memory on the machine from one gig to two gig and this has helped it in the way of it not happening as much during a work day. It happens twice and day instead of four times a day as before have had the user run the machine as a basic install of windows with out any add-ons with in the software that I have tested prior to the user having the machine. Still having the same issue. I have run out of ideas if someone would be able to help me with this I'd greatly appreciate it.

What is the current setting for virtual memory on this machine?  What kinds of applications are being run on this computer?  Have you opened up the Windows task manager and looked at the memory usage in the performance tab?  Maybe there is some application on that computer that is leaking memory, causing this problem.

The current setting for virtural memory on this machine is 4000MB. The application that he is running are: Aim instant messenger, Office 07 and office 03 (outlook), Firefox, IE, and the general programs that are installed with Windows. I have opened Windows task manager and there was one program that seemed to have a memory leak and i have uninstalled and reinstalled that software (norton anti-virus) and that took care of that memory leak. There is no other programs that are using a lot of memory.

You are saying that the computer still complains about running out of memory when you have given it 6 GB of memory in total?  What does the task manager report as the total, limit and peak commit charge values when the error messages pop up?  I have a feeling that there is something wrong with the OS installed on the computer.  Try repairing the install or just wipe the drive and start from scratch.

I have already done a fresh install on a brand new hard drive as well as a different machine and I am getting the same error on both machines from the same user.  The machine has 2GB of actuall ram in it and the virtural memory is set at 4000MB.

I am out of ideas as to what it could be.  I assume you have other similar machines in the workplace, used by other users, which do not have this problem.  There is probably something this user is using this computer for that is causing this difference in behavior.  Have you tried giving this user a different machine and giving this machine to a different user?

And it says that system restore is running in task manager.

I went into the reg to see if there was any files that were in there that shouldn't of been (software releated) i had found a few in the way of music players. I deleted them then restarted The machine will login correctly and play with standard windows start up sound, then pop up the following error: wireless configuration (header) error reads: "notification dll has not been registered, program will not work correctly. when i click ok that is all the further it will go. Any help?

I suggest you wipe the disk again and this time instruct the user specifically not to download and install any software on the machine (except what is required for work purposes).  See how stable that is.  If that solves your problem then you know the problem was caused by some nasty download that this person keeps doing.

Found the issue to be the dell wireless utility that was installed. I had intel utilty installed as well and the dell utilty is what was causing this issue to happen. Thank you all for your help.

Glad you got it worked out.  I wonder why it did not affect the other computers there and only this one particular user.
