that means that your pc used up all its ram and is using virtual memory,
1. you can set virtual memory - higher and might make your pc slower
2. buy more ram
please state what model and system specifications please.

When working with my computer, cleaning out cookies, caches, and files/folders. The memory usage keeps going up. We tried disc clean-up. Won't let us do a disc defragment (5% memory available). Went on line downloaded No adware programs to get rid of adware. That didn't help. Ran dianogonictics on hard drive with dell tech., everything O.K. there. Memory keeps getting eaten up. The more things we try the more memory that gets eaten up. Help??????

what are your system specifications and model?!?

we have a dell dimension 4700 series 512 mb ddr2 sdram 80gb hard drive. Yesterday my husband was flying his Combat Flight Simulator, so he turned it off using the power switch on the tower. Later when he turned it back on he had a message which said:Checking file system on C: the volume is dirty. The type of file system NTFS. Update AV  scan. Do you think we need to do a system restore?

Does the system have some kind of virus? How do we get rid of it? What is this Major Geek website for?

What is the major geek web-site for? What do you download? How do you do a AV scan? and what's it for? What does AV scan stand for?

heres how i might solve your problem, go to start, and run. type   cmd

then  type   chkdsk /f     and press enter

then itll ask you to schedule it next reboot type  Y and press enter and reboot

then give it some time, then when that is done, go back to run

type cmd

and type chdksk    and press enter and we'll see what happens.

Erica,

I posted the AdAware download for your question; it removes bad software that could be consuming resources (memory). You may also have a bad driver or a corrupt pagefile. After you install AdAware, update it before your run the AdAware scan. Delete all it finds. Also run an updated AV scan. Post back whether or not these 2 scans help.

btw, av stands for anti-virus; one should always start there own thread for their own problem. Even though problem may be similar the solution may be totally different. Hard enough to help one person at a time. Thanks.
