Virtual Memory
I have a Dimension 2350 with OS XP that has been giving me a virtual memory warning since day one. All corrective actions offered from Dell including adding RAM to a 640 Mb level have done nothing. Today I have custom settings of Initial 1280, max 2500 and still get an error of virtual memory is low and is increasing my page size. The recommended settings are 957 and allocated 2098.
If this is a bogus warning how do I correct or get rid of it?

Microsoft info:
" By default, Windows XP sets the initial size of the page file to 1.5 times the amount of RAM in your system, and it sets the maximum size of the page file to three times the amount of RAM. "
You could try setting "No paging file" by pressing Windows+Break(pause) keys together , Advanced tab , Performance Settings button , Advanced tab , Virtual Memory Change button & check "No paging file".
Then re-start Computer & set Virtual Memory Change to "System managed size" as before suggested.

Well if you get the same message with "System manged" or "Custom" you could try SFC & if that doesn't fix problem a Windows Repair from boot of XP CD (not the 1st R for Recovery Console but start Install by pressing "Enter" then select the next R when displayed.
First set BIOS to boot 1st from CD Drive by pressing F2 (sometimes Del key) at 1st screen , startup.
You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
sfc /scannow (space after sfc)

The SFC scan did not indicate anything. I did the repair of XP and so far have not seen anything but could be too early. Of course now I have to take care of the pop ups. I did have one problem with the repair it asked me for a file pcouffin.sys and for the patin-coffin installation disk. I have no clue what that is on or from.
Thanks for the help. If it comes back I will tell you.

I think it relates to a Patin Coffin Driver which might used by some DVD Burner Software like DVD X Copy
http://xcopy.co.uk/catalog/
What do you mean by "take care of the pop ups" , what pop-ups as you also said "have not seen anything".?
Since you did a Repair I hope you Enabled the XP Firewall before going on-line to protect against the Blaster Worm Virus until you downloaded the FREE Microsoft Patch & can then disable the XP Firewall.
Also you need to re-downloads the Windows Updates again including SP1a if not shown as contained by XP CD label.

What I meant by not seeing anything was relating to the problem with the virtual memory error. As for the pop ups with the repair all my settings regarding disabling pop ups were changed so the minute I signed on I started getting pop ups again.
My firewall was disabled while I was on line.
Thanks for the info on Patin-Coffin. I do have Roxio CD and DVD Creator sofware. It appears to work.
Thanks again for your great help.

Meant to say fire wall was enabled.
Bad news the error message is still there.

You could try a Windows Repair from boot of XP CD , NOT the first R for Recovery Console but start Install by pressing the "Enter" key then press the next R when displayed.
Repair leaves the installed Programs & Data intact but you will have to download the Windows Updates again including SP1a if it isn't shown on the XP CD label.
Remember to Enable the XP Firewall before going on-line to protect against the Blaster Worm Virus , until you can install the Free Microsoft patch.

Failing that I can only suggest a drastic Clean Install of the XP OS.
Use the below links for info on a Clean Install then install Drivers from DELL Drivers & Utilities (Resource) CD with Windows XP Desktop started ,
just insert Driver (Resource) CD & click OK.
I have shown Supersite & Elder Geek links last as they assumes Clean Install status so doesn't include step to delete existing partition & so achieve Clean Install status.
(Clean Install status , ie: no Windows OS installed on HD).
Use this link & select XP Home or PRO then method , ie: Used Hard Drive , Multi_Page has text & large pictures of Clean Install.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/
Use this link for Clean Install of XP , if you click on Pictures they Expand for easy view
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (Delete existing partition at step 10b for Clean Install)
or use this link ( *** Delete existing partition at step 5 for Clean Install ***)
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
or use this link (***Delete exiting partition at Fig 06 for a Clean Install**)
http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm
Clean Install deletes existing partition (like FDISK) & Formats HD during Install of Windows XP from XP CD.
Set BIOS to use CD-ROM as 1st boot device usually by pressing "F2" key during boot (startup),
for some Computers press "Del" key. (the Key should be shown on first screen displayed at startup)
Re-start Computer & when message "Press any key to boot from CD" shows do it & let subsequent messages "Press any key...." time out to Windows setup.
