Virtual PC 2004/Error msg 1607/cannot install printer software/CONFUSED!!!!!

:smileysad:

I am totally confused....I have a Dell 2400 and I already have a printer installed/working great(Lexmark X125 all-in-one) but I would like to install a flatbed printer/scanner( for working w/photos)...but I ran into problems and I don't what I need to do..

I contacted the Lexmark tech(which they were very nice) and they tried to walk me thru the installation and found a problem w/Microsoft Virtual PC 2400...the tech gave me this link>kbprb-KB831507 to check out on the Microsoft site....there it talked about the software and the error msg>1607....but I didn't understand what I needed to do to correct the problem..

Now I know to many of you this next statement will be really stupid but I gotta ask> What is this Virtual PC 2400? How do you check to see if you even have it? I haven't been able to locate it anywhere in my data...

When I try to install the Lexmark 5250 the comp does go online and I can print using the comp...but it doesn't DL the editing/control center software....basically all I can do is to hit the print button to print X many copies and that is it...I do not have the scan/editing features ....

Now if no one can help me solve this problem who would I need to contact  Dell or Microsoft???

Hopefully someone here will have the knowledge/time to help

Thank You

Unless you have installed Virtual PC on your 2400, someone is way off base here.  Virtual PC is software hat runs on top of your current OS that emulates another OS running, in this case Server 2003.  You can in theory run a domain with a Server and PC from just one machine if you have enough horesepower.

Your case would have a "Virtual Server" running whihc needs 5 minutes to updates all the settings in order torecognize all the machine changes  for hardware, but I seriously doubt you are doing this, right?????.

Did you download the latest drivers for the Lexmark device and not rely upon the CD?  That would be advisable.

yes I have..went to the Lexmark site and DLed the drivers for this specific printer(on advise from the Lexmark tech)

I am not sure as to what you are talking about w...OS...

All I know for sure is that I have checked my Add & Delete for this program and I also ran a search and the results is Zilch!!!

That is why I am so confused(well at least on this matter:smileywink:)...I am getting an error msg about a program that I cannot find on my comp..so why??? and what do I need to do to correct it???

Well I have just the better part of the evening talking to the techs at Microsoft/Dell/Lexmark w/results>>>>>>>>>NOTHING!!!!!

Each one blamed the other for this problem so here I am...I am hoping that there is a GENIUS amongst the members that can help solve this problem

So I am going to try and lay out the problem from start to finish including all findings

SYSTEM INFOell 2400/dial-up/Lexmark X125 all-in-one installed(working great)/XP & XP2

GOAL: I want to install a fltbed printer/scanner for editing/printing old family photos(the 5200 series has a restore old photo feature) and keep the X125 also online for printing documents/fax

HISTORY: In installing a Lexmark printer you do not use the Wizard as the installation that comes w/printer has the Lexmark installation program..

I have no problem starting the disk/installation but when it comes to installing the files for OCR I get this error msg:"INSTALL SHIELD  1607: UNABLE TO INSTALL INSTALLSHIELD SCRIPTING RUNTIME...This error msg can be found at Microsoft.com under kbprb-KB831507  which states" When you try to update the Virtual Machine Additions for a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, you may receive the following error message: 1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime. This issue may occur...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831507

***NOTE:I have been unable to locate this program on my comp using the search,add/delete program.I am not sure but I think it might be something in the XP program still checking.

The installation then resumes once I click the ok button...the files the DL and I am brought to the finish window where ther are 2 options(check to install center control on desktop and check to open center control) but I cannot check either option..from ther I click finish and the program closes.

Now I can print using the comp by clicking the print icon which brings up the properties of the 5200 series but I cannot access the center control for scanning/editing..

I think that about covers it so if there is an answer out there please let me know or any ?'s let me know

You have yet to mention the brand or model of the scanner.  Is it XPSP2 compatible?  (Please chill with the 90 pt type)

Ultimately, this repsonsibility lies the maker of the scanner , not Dell or Microsoft.

I would suggest completely uninstalling the device and rebooting.  The reinstalling the device, BUT, do not plug it in until you are prompted to do so.  Lexmark has always been a little "iffy" since XP was introduced.  HP is the best value for my money.

The install files for the device are here:

I realize that the scanner has it's own installer but I would look at this page if the re-install doesn't do the trick. Did you do a virus scan ? Update the Windows new Installer ? Can't hurt.

OK, I give up!!! I have tried everything....as for ? about scanning for virus/unknown that is done religiously every 3days.....I have checked all updates. I have already tried using the files offered online for installing the drivers,I have tried to install using the msconfig feature...I just don't know what else I could try..

Dell finally did write and suggested that I Dl all my important files on disk and then re-install XP....a little scared to try this although I might have to if I keep running into problems like this..

I am going to try and take this printer/scanner back and try a different namebrand and hopefully will be able to get something done

Will let you know how it all turns out..I do want say Thank You for the great advice and help offered here...I guess there are some problems that just cannot be solved

Just to confirm: you did try the link I posted with the error message that kicked out ?

I'm don't know if one thing is causing the problem or if there is one thing that will fix it. Somethings you could try:

-check your Device Manager for anything suspicious

-run msinfo32 for any conflicts

-make sure all services are set to xp defaults

-run sfc /scannow (note space)

-set permissions, per the link I gave you earlier, for the iscript folder as well as the temp folder used by the installation

- uninstall both installs followed by a reboot.

-go offline and disable your XP firewall and your AV

Now try the flatbed installation with only the flatbed physically connected. If that works try to add the second all-in-one. You may just have 2 many of the same (usb) devices grabbing for the same system software.

Ok,there is something definetly wrong w/comp....as I have started over w/HP PSC 1610v All-in-one and cannot install it...

Now I am getting the following error msg>

ERROR SITUATION CODE:34566530

EXPLAINATION:The following lines were retrieved from the installation error logs:

Now launching+x:/hpzprIo1.exe-m preloadingrecoverymechanism-Ixxx-fx:/DIVinns???.DAT

Trying to create folder with pfolder=""!!!

Failed to open destination file HP/temp/{342c7c88-D335-4bce-8CF1-281857629ce2}/setup/hpzscr01.exe

error 0x3:the system cannot fins the path specified

Copy filesC)failed with the system cannot find the path specified Exit code=3

I am so sorry to sound so stupid but right now I am totally lost as to what/how to fix this and Dell isn't a bit of help...

I explained to them it was quite obvious that there was something wrong w/comp being 2 different printer could not be installed...but I am sure that some of you know what their reply was"for a fee we can help you w/non-Dell products"NOT THE PROBLEM!! but it falls on deaf ears...

I guess I am going to have to try and locate/pay for someone w/comp experience to come out and service this mess...that should be fun being I live in  a very rural area and our biggest store here is Walmarts...seriously..

Unless some one can help me to figure this out and has the patience to explain to me what to do I am at your mercy..

Please help me

Of course that's their response, it's not their device that won't work, and don't be so quick to blame the computer/  I've seen stranger things than this such an application we run at work, all of a sudden it prints multiple page documents to just one page.  Print to another printer and all is fine.  Hook up another desktop to the bad printer and all is fine.  Now you tell me how to trouble shoot that one.

It definitely sounds like something is corrupted within the OS, back up your data and reinstall the OS.  Yes, I know it's a pain, but you've already spent more time on this than a clean install would have taken.

I am happy to report that I now have my new scanner/printer installed..

I met a couple of great comp techs(locally) thru my daughter and they offered to stop by and check out the problem...it took all of 10 min and they had it figured out and fixed..

It was an MSDOS doc on my desktop(have no idea how it even got there) also there were 2 orphan(spyware) programs that had attached themselves to my start-up...the reason I hadn't detected them when I ran my spyware/adware eliminator is that they disguise themselves in your personal data and change/re-locate them selves when you try to get rid of them...what a nightmare!!!

The boys DLed the spybot program and told me that was the only program they knew that would help catch them but that I still need to go into my registry and remove them manually..

So that is my story...finally got to print out the old photos(which they turned out really nice) Thanks to the person who recommended I try the HP printer/scanner....

I do want to say Thank You to all of you in trying to help me w/this...I really appreciated all your time and effort..
