Virus Question

Concerning my desktop with XP Home SP1a and Norton Anti Virus 2004:

Is it possible to have a virus or a virus with a payload that has not hit yet even though all my definitions are up to date, all Windows criticle up-dates are up to date, and a full system virus scan shows no problems. Also I run Spybot and it shows no spyware or problems. If so how do I check this out.

Thanks................

BrickYard,

It is possible, although unlikely. Most viruses are detected prior to their activation date and the writeups on the antivirus software publishers' sites will usually identify the date that the payload is set to activate.

Absolutley.  There was a bug a couple of years ago that sat dormant until a certain date and then it "hatched".  Just don't open any attachments from stragers and then only ones you expect from known senders and keep your virus definitions up to date.  Set your Norton to auto update and you'll sleep better.

Denny Denham,

My XP Home was newly installed on a new hdd. It seems like that as soon as I started downloading Criticle Up-dates I got hit with the Blaster virus worm about 3 times. I used the memoval tool from Symantec, now ok.

In looking at my NAV Threat Alert Log it shows about 10 entries that contain around 3 different problems. Some say they have been repaired some say repair failed. One of the ones that say repaired failed is called Downloader. Trojan I search the hdd and could not come up with anything. This downloader.trojan is listed about 3 times all with different paths, some say repair failed and some say access denied. My virus scan turns up nothing.

If it's still possible although remote to have a virus of some type and not have it show up on a system scan how would somone check to see if they were infected.

Thanks........................

BrickYard,

Open Norton AntiVirus and go to Reports|Quarantined Items. Click the View Report button. You will probably find the entries for Downloader.Trojan there, as that is where NAV places files that cannot be cleaned. You can delete them from there. Since they are quarantined, they would not be reflected in a system scan.

Denny Denham,

Yes that's where they are. You used the word cleaned? Does that mean NAV removed the virus from my machine and now I must delete it from the reports log file.  Thanks.............
