Vista 32bits to Win7 64bits?

Question

Hi, I have just bought a Dell Laptop Studio 17 (model 1737), I bought it on Sept 29th, was sent to Argentina (where I live) on Oct 3rd, and just got it last friday - Oct 16th. I want to know: 1- I can't register in the windows 7 registering webpage to get my DVD. It says that I should wait for 10 days after the buy to be on the system and be able to register, and if 10 days have passed I should review the inserted service tag... How much more time should I wait in order to be able to register to get my free copy of Win7 32bits?? (I know my system is eligible). 2- Is there a chance to get the windows 7 64bits version? I didn't realize the win vista 32bits version is the one I was getting, I have read about the DSN Document ID 158098, but when asking to Tech support they say the item doesn't exist anymore. I need some directions on if and how to accomplish this. Thanks in advance! Jorgelina

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

If your system shipped with the 32 bit OS you will receive a 32 bit win 7 disk. I have not received any information about being able to get the 64 bit Windows 7 disk. The article 158098 refers to Windows Vista upgrade.

You should be aware that you cannot upgrade 64 bit windows over 32 bit. You would have to do a custom "clean" install and reformat the drive and lose everything on your computer. You would then have to reinstall all the software from disks and some factory software could be lost. This applies to both Vista and Windows 7. Since you have a laptop, you probably should stick with 32 bit vista and install 32 bit windows 7. 64 bit is better installed on high powered desktops. I'm using Windows 7 32 bit on a high powered 64 bit capable desktop and am very pleased with it. Dell has been installing 64 bit vista on all its new computers--even laptops-- that can run it. Since yours came with 32 and you will be receiving Win 7 32bit, it's safer to stay with that.

PS Look at Control Panel, Advanced System Info, Performance and Information Tools, select View and Print detailed system info.... to see if your computer is rated "64 bit capable."

Thanks for the recommendation. I believe the system is 64bit capable, since configuration, and that now Dell is selling it with a win 7 64 bits... But I'll check it out with the information Tools.

About data loss I am not worried since there is nothing in the HD that is important to me.

Still, I'd rather a 64bit system over a 32bit system.. there are stuff I'd love to try :)
