I installed Vista home premium last night. how do I get the areo function to active? I have a 256k video card and the checks before installing said that aero would run ok.

One of the new features most talked about in Windows Vista is the Aero interface. Aero Basic is the default interface in Vista. Aero Glass is the high end version that is only available with the right video card. To enable Aero Glass, your computer must be equipped with a 3D video card that supports DirectX 9 and has a Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM) driver.

Aero Glass should be enabled by default if your video card supports it. If it is not enabled, you can turn Aero Glass on using the steps listed below:

1. Right click your desktop and click Personalize.
2. Select Windows Color and Appearance.
3. From the list of color schemes, click Windows Vista Aero.
4. Click OK

Thanks for the info.  I went to the ATI site and found that they now have a driver for vista 32bit. I downloaded this, followed you instructions, and bingo. Still working on the flip 3d. haven't figured that out yet.

Isn't flip 3d where you hold down the Windows key and hit Tab instead of Alt-Tab to move through programs?  If so, open a few programs, then hold the Windows key while you hit the tab and you should get the flip 3d effect, which is part of Aero.

There is also an Icon on the quick launch menu to do the same as the Windows key and tab.

also if you press CTRL+Windows Key+TAB then you don't have to hold down the buttons whilst scrolling through the open windows with your mouse, such a cool feature!

You can also scroll with the tab key. I like it!

if you hold ctrl + window + tab, you can let go and also scroll with the up and down arrow.  I'm loving this feature a lot.  At work, I use it to show off to customers but I never seen the real benefit of it until i started doing heavy multitasking with my laptop and it is super convenient to have when it gets hard to distinguish between windows.  Also, a very cool feature I love, I have tv tuner and the preview window shows active tv and all, that is seriously a hot feature.

lol, do a search for Beryl or Compiz (they run on Linux).  Make your entire desktop one giant 6-sided cube and flip that around with the mouse.  You like the flip-3d stuff, but you'd fall in love with moving the entire desktop around in real time, just like it was a die that wants to be cast :D
