Vista Problem with FFDshow codex

I just bought an Inspiron 5100 with Vista Home Premium. When I use WMP 11, the .avi runs but at the end I get a error message "COM surrogate has stopped working", system stops the program amd reports that the FFDshow codec is the problem. System refers me to a site that is not obviously helpfull. How do I get rid of or replace FFDshow (which I do not think I installed)???

I had this problem too... It is usually installed with some open source media players or video ripping or encoding software. I think I had democracy player or something installed that was causing the issue with mine. I can't be sure though I know that I uninstalled that and some of the video encoders for my PSP and the errors stopped.

I bought one of those 3 inch thick books on Vista. Although not directly related to my probem it suggested installing the K-lite codec package. I did and K-lite informed me my FFDshow was broken and proceeded to fix it! That was cool. That also resulted in faster operation of the whole unit. Also cool.
