Vista reinstall question

I have reinstalled XP hundreds of times. But I have only installed from scratch and did an upgrade once with Vista. I have a friend whose Vista Home Premium is all messed up, but she doesn't want to lose any programs by reinstalling. Is there an option like XP has of repairing your Vista installation without going back to square one? IF so how do I find it after inserting the Disk to reinstall?  Thanks.

If you have the proper Vista media you can, but always back up your data before trying this.

No, that is the only way to do a "repair" in Vista.

The only other thing you can do is a system restore, pick a date before the problem started.

Looks like that might be an option if you have a Vista Upgrade disk. But I have the Vista Premium OEM Disk that came with my Inspiron. It says an upgrade is not an option. Any other ideas?

Try tapping the F8 key during boot. This should get you into a Vista repair mode. If not then put the Vista DVD and boot to it by using F12 and then selecting Onboard or USB CD/DVD Drive. more at :
