My computer has been doing this ever since I got it (Inspiron 1501, Home Premium). The easiest way to solve the problem is to wait for the drive light to stop and then do a "brain death": pull out the AC adapter and then disconnect the battery.

This happens to me a few times a week.

If I unplug my printer USB, shut down and reboot is very quick.  If the printer is plugged in, it takes forever, if ever,  to shut down.  Now getting my printer to work consistantly is another story............

it seems like a lot of people are having the same problem, but noone yet has the solution.  so please dont forget to come back when you find the solution and share it with the rest of us.  I have tried updating the bios, the chipset, the dvd firmware, and audio driver, so far that hasnt helped.  I also make sure any USB is disconected and also my bluetooth.  nothing yet.  I also found a interesting forum on how to view the logs of vistas errors, that shows whats causing the problem supossely... but there seemed to be different reasons each time.   so that didnt get me anywhere and it still dint tell me how to fix it....  oh well we will continue trying with this annoying problem.  I just hope I am not cuasing any more problems by doing the hard shutdowns.  since It alwasy starts up asking me wether I want to to start in safe mode or nor....

I have had the same problem after first time connecting my inspiron 1501 to the home network via ethernet cable. I could only shut down by hard reset. After disconnecting the ethernet cable the systems shut down regularly. I did´nt find a solution.

I'm having the same ethernet 'hang' only mine is a Dell 530 Inspiron/Vista.  If I remove the driver it shuts down just fine.  I've tried changing drivers but so far no success at getting this thing to shut down!  Sure would appreciate some help - dell support, Aziz, finally told me during our lengthy phone conversation which included a lot of repeating on his part, due to the lack of mastery of our english language, that he would have to do additional research and after verifying my phone number said he would call me back - that was 1/10.  I've been working on this problem every time I have a few minutes but can't resolve it.  I have to say since I received my Dell in October I haven't had time to enjoy it at all - one problem after another and this shut down situation is sooooooo frustrating!

At Thanksgiving time I added 'Christmas' presents of a HP all in one Desktop for Hubby and it has encountered NO problems whatsoever and a Toshiba laptop, also absolutely NO problems - both are Vista machines so it's definitely something Dell is doing or using when they configure these machines from the factory.

I finally got so fed up I reinstalled all the software received with my computer (not realizing Dell had a revert to factory setting/OS) so now I don't have that ...... though the CD's I received SHOULD have done the same thing, I would think.  I think I now understand why they push Dell Care (or whatever it's called) so strongly - they must know the computers aren't stable.  I have been a computer user since 1986 and have never needed 'tech' help so didn't purchase it....  This is my first purchase and based on my experience with Dell support techs and lack of CARE on the part of the company, it will be my last.
HELP!!!!!  ANYONE?????

:smileymad: I'm having this problem with my 1720 I just purchased a week ago. All I have added is Office 2007 and a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router. I called Dell Support today and this is what they told me to do: unplug from ac and remove battery. Hold power button down for 10 secs. This seem to work but as soon as you do an update or add software this problem comes back. I ran dell pc checkup program and memory address test failed, memory bit high test failed and memory checkerboard test failed. Not sure if this is a direct link to the problem has anybody else tried this? I'm currently not happy with this notebook. Have always been a fan of HP never had problem unless it was a user error. I did happen to try turning off WiFi switch and that seem to work?????

Problem fixed.   dont ask how, because I did so manyh things that I dont know where the problem was fixed.  but having said that, what I did do was download all the latest drivers from the dell download site.  I dont know which one was creating the problem.  but after updating all of them.  I did not have the shutdown problem again.   I Wish I knew which hardware was creating the conflict, sorry.   so I would suggest to go their and download all the available updates driver bios etc.   hopefully you will have the same positive results.  its been about two months now since I fixed the problem and never had a problem again witht he shut down.   just a a note.  I would never go back to HP. (that boat sailed along time ago).

so dont give up, your hard work will pay off.

My brand new Insperion 1720 had the shut down problem from the day I got it, and I finally traced it to the Trend-Micro Pc-cillan that was pre-loaded by Dell as the problem, when it was uninstalled- shut down without a problem, with it installed, no shut down without a forced shut down with the power button.  Talked to Dell who had no clue what I was saying and wanted to be paid for their advice, I hesitated since they have not been able to solve a problem yet, emailed Trend-Micro who were not much help, kept telling me to uninstall and reinstall with a link that they sent me- only problem was the "link" was corrupted, I don't think they understood the word corrupted, so I abandoned that route too, finally approached the problem through Microsoft Vista help and found the fix.  Turns out Vista is unstable with a long list of software, the info states that there may be issues if any of the listed software is installed on your system, and the list is quite long.  The hotfix number for microsoft is 943302 --- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=943302 - I hope I copied this riight, this solved my problem.  I think the date on this fix from Microsoft was some time in February.
