Vista SP1 Update crashes

I tried to install the SP1 as standalone and also over Windows Update. In both cases it crashes. I used also the SFC tool that told me that

Cannot repair member file [l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.0.6000.16386, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

I installed also the CheckSUR Tool, that found no errors.

The error i get after the reboot ist 80070002

try the info from this link, ive seen this one before and this solution worked for me.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/c5f4d9e0-3eb6-426b-8118-0cedf489a75f1033.mspx

If these types of errors persists, you will have no choice other than to run your vista cd installer, and "upgrade" your current version. This will fix your windows update errors. It wont change any of your settings, and your programs will continue to work

good luck

Thanks, i will try and tell you if it worked or not. I also tried to contact MS and hope they could help me too. I guess i have to upgrade my Vista, cause maybe the nightmare depends on corrupted files. I have no idea how to do this, but  for all eventualities i ordered acronis true image home 11 to make a backup before. I suppose to try this weekend, but i will post asap more and maybe the solution.

I followed your clue but no solution. MS is still trying to help me too, but also without success. I sent some logs and wait for the right suggestion. I think that the upgrade solution to save my installation by overwriting the OS could be the  way. I will make an image of the partition and will try that way. I have no idea how, but in this board i will sure find the steps to make the upgrade without destroying my installation.

Here we are. Finally i reached the finish. First of all i want to thank all the people helped me. Second point is that i suggest to make a Backup at least of all your data, but i made it of the whole PC. The job run a while, with a lot of reboots and with few little problems, but easy to solve.

I tried a lot and at the end i had to make a In-place upgrade

Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer
===================================================

1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to your System Type:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 434.5MB)

http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/a/9/3a9b72c2-527d-4694-8a49-84c056d4c34d/Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 64-bit (Size: 726.5MB)

http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/3/b/83b8c814-b000-44a4-b667-8c1f58727b8b/Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.exe

2. Please save it on the Desktop.

Step 2 : In-place upgrade
========================

1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

• If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.
• If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK.

Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.

4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to repair the current operating system to Windows Vista.

5. After rebooting i used the Windows Update Funktion to make my Vista-Installation up to date again.

Before you begin to install SP1 i suggest to unplug all external devices during installation.

After that, let’s try to instal Windows Vista SP1 as follows

Step 3: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot mode
========================================

Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.

4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.

I hope this could help

just to understand more as I have a similar issue. you used the vista install disk to fix vista. then did the standalone  sp1 upgrade.

did you lose any data? does this keep any existing installed programs in operatiing state? or do you have reinstall all 3rd party stuff?

thanks for your help in advance.

I used the Vista Install CD i got with my Dell System. After that i used the standalone SP1 Package. I think i didn't lost something. I had few problems like two drivers i hat to reinstall and i had to repair two software installs (Nero InCD didn't start and an acronis driver had to be reinstalled). Maybe there is more that i haven't seen by now, but i think it's pretty insignificant related to a full install. The only thing is that you need a lot of time.

tried this and still, SP1 will not install!!!!!!

I get to the cancel/allow, click allow and nothing.

Help Please anyone!

Microsoft told me to do exactly as you listed, and it gave me the same results.

I even uninstalled 95% of the 3rd party applications.
