Vista "Start" menu & System Restore BUG

Ever since I've installed Windows Vista business on my computer, few months ago, I've been encountering problems with "Start menu" which are, in a strange way, connected with My Documents folder and System Restore.

It happened few times after I had installed new program.

The first time, problem was caused by CyberLink PowerDVD v7 (or I think it was) - after the installation all programs and links from "Start" menu have disappeared! Fortunately, System Restore "worked" and I was able to set computer in pre-install state. Then I installed older version of PowerDVD and everything worked fine.

Only few days after that again something was wrong with "Start" menu but this time System Restore and Shadow Copy (which I think saves "previous folder versions" ) didn't have any saved previous computer/folder states!? So I had to customize and rearrange folders AGAIN.

And yesterday this happened again! After the installation of newest ffdshow codec pack (previous version worked fine) some folders and programs (e.g. Windows mail, Internet Explorer, Opera Browser...) are missing other lost their custom icons (which I manually selected from a folder) and System Restore says "there's no system restore points" (which I've created only few days ago!!).

What could be causing this problem!?

Thanks for reply, but I don't think that solution could help me.

I can run System Restore but although I've created restore points few days ago it says: "No restore points found", and beside that "Start" menu is in mess.
