Vista Upgrade doesn´t work (BCD error during expanding files)

I finally received the upgrade kit from Dell for my Dimension 9200. As described in the attached brochure, I ran the upgrade assistant first and then started the Vista upgrade.

21% into the files expansion procedure the upgrade is aborted and the error msg says something like the windows boot configuration could not be updated (maybe the English error msg is a bit different in the wording, but I hope you understand which error I´m talking about).

I checked setupact.log and setuperr.log and they said the following:

setuperr:

Somebody at another forum suggested to check if the partition I wanted to do the upgrade on had enough free space for Vista. I did not change anything about the hard disk configuration or the partitions since buying my Dell, so I thought at first that I had not any partitions at all (explorer shows only C: as well). Then I went into the system information in the control panel and the boot.ini. And the boot.ini said XP MCE (my current OS) was running on partition 2. And system informations shows this: http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xpsysteminfosv2.jpg

Does this mean Dell pre-installed XP on a 4,5GB partition?? Is this causing the above problem? How can I solve it and why wasn´t this problem acknowledged during the upgrade preparation kit Dell provided with Vista?

Thanks for your reply, Bill. But honestly, I´m very unfamiliar with RAID and this is currently my only PC at home. Will my XP MCE still boot when I change the RAID/SATA settings as you propose? Is there are a substantial risk of shooting down my system by changing this setting?

Bill, I just added my service tag to my profile. My system is a RAID one i guess. I changed the setting in the BIOS to Auto-detect. XP MCE booted successfully, I tried to upgrade again, but the same error popped up again. It´s a very frustrating issue as I always have to restore my system after a failed attempt because audio drivers do not work any more after the aborted Vista installation. My intention was to upgrade my current XP MCE that came preinstalled on my Dell to Vista Home Premium with the upgrade kit supplied by Dell. I neither want dual-boot nor would I like to do a clean install. I would like to retain my settings, programs etc. and take them over to Vista. The partitions that seem to be on my system came preinstalled with it. Your help is appreciated.

Bill, I will try to get some cheap USB floppy from ebay. Until then, I uploaded the complete setupact.log.
You can look at it here: http://files.filefront.com//;7308065;;/

Maybe we can eliminate the RAID controller issue by going through the part of setupact.log where the drive detecion is being executed.

It says something like, it finds the Intel RAID/SATA controller and that it is supported. But it also says things like "BUS is unknown".

Thanks in advance!
