Hi corkboy, Your CPU speed is ok to run Vista. What you can do is to download Windows Vista upgrade advisor HERE, and it will check your whole system for you.
First, let me state that I have VISTA on 6 of my 9 pcs, 3 have XP. I like VISTA and always have.
Having said that, in my opinion even if the upgrade advisor says you can upgrade, I believe it's a good idea to stay with XP until you actually purchase a new machine. This way it will insure that all your pc hardware will be VISTA compatible. I have seen, heard, read, many problems with people who upgraded older systems from XP to VISTA. I am not saying you'll have problems, but you never know. Besides, if you wait it's possible that you'll upgrade in a yera or two and Windows 7 will be available.
This is just one man's opinion. But I think it's a good idea to get many differing opinions before making a decision.
I ran the upgrade advisor and was informed my system failed because it was running XP :emotion-1:. But everything else was OK. But as we all know the minimum requirements are often far from ideal for running something this resource heavy. I'd hate to install Vista and then see a considerable degradation in system performance.
Thanks for that. I upgraded to 3GB RAM and have had to buy a new DVD RW and Hard drive already. I'm still deciding if I need to boost my processor power which I think will be the best idea.
Hi corkboy, Those minimum requirements given by microsoft are not very good, you really need 2GB or ram to run vista, and not 1GB as said by microsoft. However, if you like the idea of an upgrade, then go ahead. But, I prefer to have vista preinstalled, with the hardware to go with it. For most people that will require an new system.

A 2.8GHz CPU is easily fast enough to run Vista plus applications, without experiencing slow-downs :emotion-55:
